No. 2 Men’s Soccer Ends Non-Conference Play with Shutout of Trine

The second-ranked Case Western Reserve University men's soccer team ended its non-conference schedule with a 2-0 victory over Trine University on Saturday afternoon at Weaver Field in Angola, Indiana.

The Spartans improved to 8-0-1 this season, while the Thunder dropped to 2-5-1 in 2026.

Stats and Standouts

  • First-year Spencer Abbott and senior Mitchell Fein were the goalscorers for Case Western Reserve
  • Senior Cormac Apostolides and junior Ashton McNally added assists on the goals
  • Fein, McNally, and graduate student Saiheed Jah each had a team-high three shots with Jah and McNally putting two on goal
  • Sophomore Carter Shedd earned his third consecutive shutout, saving three shots in 90 minutes. He lowered his goals against average to 0.35 in 2026

First Half

  • Trine took the first shot five minutes into the game which Shedd saved
  • CWRU had a pair of chances in the eighth and 10th minutes
  • The Thunder responded with two shots on goal of their own in the 16th and 18th minutes with Shedd saving both attempts
  • McNally had an attempt saved in the 20th minute, the last shot on goal until the final few minutes of the half
  • Abbott finally broke the deadlock in the 44th minute, slotting a shot into the bottom right corner of the goal from six yards away with an assist from Apostolides

Second Half

  • The Spartans attacking early in the second half, earning a corner kick just 78 seconds into the period
  • In the 52nd minute, senior Ohta Kamiya had an attempt saved before Fein found the back of the net just 56 seconds later with an assist from McNally
  • CWRU kept the pressure up, taking four more shots over the next four minutes
  • Trine's Britton Sala had three shots midway through the half, missing on all three attempts
  • The hosts took three attempts with under 15 minutes remaining, including one off a corner kick, but did not challenge Shedd in the net
  • The Thunder kept up the pressure, attempting three more shots in final 10 minutes
  • With under a minute to go, sophomore Maximilian Majewski had a shot saved off a corner kick

  • CWRU went undefeated in non-conference play for the second consecutive season after a 6-0-3 mark in non-league games last year
  • The Spartans improved to 2-1-0 against the Thunder with the three matchups occurring in 2026, 2024, and 2006
  • Case Western Reserve had a 16-12 edge in shots and 9-3 advantage in shots on goal
  • The Spartans have shut out six of their nine opponents this season, allowing just three goals all season
  • Fein has recorded at least one point in five of the past six games, scoring three goals and adding three assists
  • Abbott became the 14th player to score a goal for the Spartans this season
