Women’s Soccer Falls to Grove City

The Case Western Reserve University women's soccer team fell from the ranks of the unbeaten on Saturday afternoon at DiSanto Field in Cleveland, dropping a 2-0 decision to Grove City College.

The Spartans fell to 4-1-0 this season, while the Wolverines improved to 3-0-1.

Stats and Standouts


  • Sophomore Izzy Probst led the squad with four shots, including two of the team's three attempts on goal
  • Junior Taylor Brackett had three shots
  • Senior Kat Tsarouhas and sophomore Mia Modrovich each played 90 minutes for the Spartans
  • CWRU held a 12-8 edge in shots and 5-3 advantage in corner kicks

First Half


  • The Spartans took the first six attempts of the game in the first 15 minutes with one of the shots needing a save and two others blocked
  • Grove City broke the deadlock on a goal by Ava Soley with an assist from Tori Stevenson in the 31st minute
  • The only shot for the remainder of the half was saved by junior Ellie Palaian

Second Half


  • Palaian saved a pair of shots in the 56th and 59th minutes before CWRU had a chance to equalize in the 60th minute when a shot by Probst was saved, leading to a corner kick
  • Nothing came of the set piece, though the Spartans had another chance from the corner in the 67th minute of play
  • An attempt by junior Ashley Liang was saved in the 75th minute, the team's final attempt on goal of the period
  • With just 10 minutes left to play, the Wolverines doubled their lead with Soley's second goal of the day
  • CWRU managed only a last-minute corner kick as their comeback bid fell short

Spartan Notes


  • The Spartans fell to 4-1-0 against Grove City in the all-time series with all four meetings coming since 2010
  • The loss snaps a streak of 67 consecutive regular season non-conference undefeated matches for CWRU with the team's last loss coming in 2018
  • Case Western Reserve played four of its first give games of the season at home, but will not return to DiSanto Field until September 29

The Spartans will look to bounce back on Friday, September 18 when the team travels to Holland, Michigan, to face Hope College. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
