Early Goals Propel Women’s Soccer to Win at Hope

The Case Western Reserve University women's soccer team struck for a pair of goals in the opening 10 minutes on Friday afternoon, as the Spartans (5-1-0) were able to hold on for a 2-1 win over the Hope College Flying Dutch (2-2-1) in Holland, Michigan. 

Stats and Standouts

  • Sophomore Izzy Probst scored her team-leading fourth goal of the season in just the third minute of the game, and graduate student Sophie Berman added her first goal of the campaign in the ninth minute of action.

  • CWRU junior goalkeeper Ellie Palaian made three saves, all in the first half, and earned the win to improve to 4-1-0 with a 1.26 goals-against average this year.

  • The Spartans finished with a 14-8 edge in shots and an 8-4 edge in shots on goal.

First Half

  • Probst got the Spartans on the board early in the game, scoring at the 2:30 mark. She received a pass approximately 36 yards out from goal and proceeded to work her way around several defenders before launching a low shot across the face of the goal and past the keeper into the bottom far corner of the net.

  • Berman extended the Spartans' lead at the 8:55 mark, intercepting a clearing attempt by a Hope centerback on the outskirts of the 18-yard box, and returning a shot past the oncoming keeper to put CWRU in front 2-0.

  • The rest of the half was played fairly evenly, with each team taking five shots, three shots on goal, and one corner kick during the first 45 minutes.

Second Half

  • Hope cut the lead in half in the 69th minute, breaking through for a goal to make it a 2-1 score.

  • Despite allowing the goal, the CWRU defense was strong in the second half, allowing just three shots (one on goal) in the final 45 minutes to help preserve the lead and secure the victory.

Spartan Notes

  • Friday's game was the first-ever meeting between the Spartans and the Flying Dutch.

  • While Friday's goal was the first of Berman's Spartan career, it was the 17th goal of her career overall, which includes 65 games as an undergraduate at Washington and Lee University. She is the fourth different Spartan to score a game-winning goal this season.

  • The Spartans improved to 2-0-0 in road contests this season, while handing Hope its first home setback in three matches this year.

  • CWRU is 3-1-3 after losses in the Coach Johnson era and 4-1-4 after losses since the start of the 2021 season.
