Apostolides Scores Twice for Men’s Soccer in Win over Lycoming

Case Western Reserve University senior Cormac Apostolides notched the first multiple-goal effort of his career, scoring a goal in each half, as the Spartans (5-0-0) remained undefeated on the season with a 3-0 victory over Lycoming College (2-2-0) at DiSanto Field in Cleveland on Saturday afternoon.

Stats and Standouts


  • Apostolides converted a penalty kick in the 24th minute and put the finishing touches on a free kick in the 51st minute to record his second and third goals of the season.

  • Sophomore Micah Rossen added his team-leading fourth goal of the campaign in the 33rd minute of the contest.

  • Junior Owen Guffey assisted on a pair of goals and leads all Spartan players with three assists this season. Senior Sean Wilson added an assist as well.

  • Sophomore Carter Shedd played the first 77 minutes in goal, making one save. First-year Louis Markin closed out the final 13 minutes of the team shutout.

  • The Spartans' defense allowed just two shots, including one on goal, during the game. Meanwhile, CWRU took 16 shots, with 10 ending up on frame.

First Half


  • Junior Ashton McNally was pulled down inside the 18-yard box on a breakaway attempt, setting up a penalty kick for the Spartans. Apostolides was able to convert the resulting attempt to put CWRU up 1-0 by the 23:53 mark.

  • CWRU added on a goal at the 31:07 mark, as Rossen redirected a corner kick from Guffey into the back corner of the net to extend the lead to 2-0.

  • The Spartans outshot the Warriors 11-1 in the first half of action.

Second Half


  • The Spartans were able to convert another set piece early in the second half, as a free kick from Guffey from 45 yards out was touched by Wilson to a sliding Apostolides, who redirected the ball into the net to put CWRU up 3-0 with 40 minutes left to play in the game.

  • The CWRU defense locked down the win from that point, allowing just one more shot to Lycoming, en route to the victory.

Spartan Notes


  • Apostolides leads all Spartans this season with two game-winning goals.

  • CWRU has won the last three meetings against Lycoming and is 3-1 all-time against the Warriors.

  • The Spartans have not allowed a goal in the last 350 minutes and 49 seconds of game action. CWRU has outscored its opponents 18-2 this year and has a 0.40 goals-against average with three shutouts.

  • Shedd improved to 5-0-0 on the season in net with a 0.45 goals-against average.

  • This is just the second time in the last 26 seasons that the Spartans have opened with a 5-0-0 record, along with the 2007 campaign.

  • The Spartans have already attempted four penalties this season, converting three, with the fourth directly leading to a goal.

  • Rossen has notched at least one point in every game for CWRU this season.
