The Case Western Reserve University baseball team celebrated Senior Day in grand fashion on Sunday afternoon, sweeping 14th-ranked Washington University (Mo.) in a doubleheader at Nobby's Ballpark. Senior Jasiah Harris provided a walk-off single in the bottom of the tenth in a 6-5 win in the first game, before the Spartans completed the sweep with a 6-4 victory in the late affair.
After splitting the four-game series against WashU, the Spartans wrapped up University Athletic Association play with an 8-12 conference record, good for a fifth-place finish in the league, while improving to 19-19 overall. The Bears placed second in the league with a 12-8 ledger in conference play, while dropping to 28-11 overall.

First-year Jaxon Knutson finished the day five-for-nine (.556) at the plate with three runs batted in, and scored the game-winning run in the 10th inning of the first game after singling to start the inning.

Graduate student Eli Westrick added four hits in eight at-bats, while Harris and junior Nate Arterburn each had three.

Making the first start of his career (spanning 36 appearances in three seasons) in the second game of the doubleheader, junior Zach Barnes allowed just one run on five hits over five innings to pick up the win and improve to 3-2 on the year.

Sophomore Charlie Griffith, working on just one day's rest after throwing the first two and a third innings on Friday before the contest was suspended due to rain, recorded the final two outs of the game, earning his first career save in just his fifth relief effort of his career (which includes 23 total appearances).

The Spartans broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth when senior Matt Trout reached on a two-out walk, stole second, moved to third on an error, and scored on a single by Arterburn.

WashU responded in its next at-bat, scoring four runs to take a 4-1 lead.

Trout doubled with one out in the sixth inning and came around to score the second run of the game for the Spartans on a run-scoring single by Knutson, making it a 4-2 contest.

The Bears would get the run back, scoring in the top of the seventh to go back up by three runs, 5-2.

Senior catcher Sean Donahue walked to start the bottom of the seventh and scored from first on a double by Westrick. Westrick later scored a run of his own on a ground out by from Trout, cutting the Bears' lead to a run, 5-4.

CWRU tied the game in the ninth, when Donahue doubled to start the inning and scored on a base hit up the middle by Westrick. The Spartans went on to load the bases with out out, but a line drive double play ended the threat and the inning and sent the contest into extra innings.

After sophomore Anton Sabo pitched a scoreless 10th, Knutson led off the bottom of the frame with a base hit and moved to second on a sacrifice by first-year Elijah Sledge. The next batter, Harris, delivered a base hit up the middle, and Knutson scampered home from second to give the Spartans the walk-off win.

Sabo pitched the final two and a third innings of the game, holding the Bears scoreless on a hit and a walk with two strikeouts. He picked up his first win of the season with the effort, improving to 1-0.

Knutson was three-for-five in the game with a run and an RBI. Westrick added a two-for-four day with a double, a run, a walk, and two RBIs, while Trout was one-for-three with two runs, an RBI, two walks, a double, and a stolen base. Harris also added two hits in the game for the Spartans.

The Spartans started quickly in the second game, scoring in the bottom of the first when Westrick singled with one out, moved to third on a base hit by junior Tyler Stillson, and scored on a groundout by first-year James O'Connor. In the second, Arterburn reached on an error, stole second and third, and crossed the plate on a groundout by first-year Collin Pool to go ahead 2-0.

WashU scored its lone run against Barnes in the top of the third, but the Spartans got back-to-back two-out, two-RBI singles from Arterburn and Knutson in the bottom of the inning to take a 6-2 lead.

Sophomore Oliver Miller took over for Barnes in the sixth and allowed a pair of runs in his first inning of work, but pitched a scoreless seventh- and eighth-inning to keep CWRU in front. Griffith entered the game with one out and a man on in the ninth, and after allowing the inherited runner to score, was able to close out the inning to notch his first career save.

The Spartans totaled 10 hits in the game, including two apiece from Westrick, Arterburn, and Knutson. Arterburn added two RBIs, two runs, a double, and two stolen bases.

WashU's Levi Gingerich started and suffered the loss, dropping to 2-2 on the year.

Prior to the game, the CWRU baseball team recognized its seven graduating players - Donahue, Thomas Downs, Harris, Austin McGowan, Archer Stankowski, Trout, and Westrick - with a special 'Senior Day' ceremony. The group helped lead the Spartans to a 108-57-1 record over the last four years with two UAA Championships and three NCAA Tournament berths.
