The Case Western Reserve University softball teams swept New York University in a doubleheader on Friday night at Bahoshy Field in the Bronx, New York, winning the first game 3-2 and taking the second 10-6 in eight innings.
The Spartans improved to 17-9 and 5-3 in University Athletic Association play, while the Violets fell to 6-22 at 0-8 in league contests.
Stats and Standouts
- First-year infielder Natalie Ching scored all three runs in the first game and went four-for-seven at the plate across the two games with two runs batted in
- Junior infielder Karen Potts and junior outfielder Alaina Steffes each had a pair of hits in the opening contest with Potts finishing the day four-for-eight overall
- Senior infielder Elizabeth Berry had two hits and two walks in the second contest with sophomore infielder Kate Coonan and first-year catcher Sophia Becker added two hits and two runs scored each
- Senior pitcher Devanghi Misra started the first game, allowing two runs on five hits in five and one-third innings with six strikeouts. She earned the save (1) in the second contest by striking out the only two batters she faced
- First-year pitcher Josephine Alspaw (5-2) won both games in the circle in relief, totaling seven and two-third innings of work. She allowed just one run on five hits and recorded 13 strikeouts, including 10 in the later game
CWRU 3, NYU 2 (Game 1)
- CWRU scored in the opening frame when Berry bunted home a run with one out and runners on second and third
- Two innings later, junior infielder Kaelyn Zusi drove in the second run with a single
- The Violets responded with a run in the bottom of the stanza
- After scoreless fourth and fifth innings, NYU tied the score at two in the sixth with a one-out double
- Alspaw stranded the go-ahead run at third base with a strikeout to end the inning
- With no outs and Ching on third base in the final frame, Potts doubled to put the Spartans ahead
- Alspaw retired the Violets in order, clinching the win
CWRU 10, NYU 6 (8 inn.) (Game 2)
- Potts led off the second game of the twin bill with a single, stole second, and quickly scored on a Ching single
- NYU claimed the lead with three runs in the bottom of the inning
- Ching delivered the team's second run with a single and scored on a single by Berry to tie the score at three
- New York scored three times in the bottom of the second to take a 6-3 advantage
- A Violet error led to a Spartan run in the third inning before a double by junior outfielder Nylah Durham brought the visitors within one
- Two batters later, Berry walked with the bases loaded to even the score at six
- The hosts loaded the bases with two outs in the sixth inning, but Alspaw escaped with a strikeout to keep the score tied
- Neither squad scored in the seventh inning with Alspaw striking out the side to force extra innings
- Berry led off the additional frame with a double as the Spartans loaded the bases with one out in the stanza
- Sophomore outfielder Ashley Miller delivered a go-ahead double, plating a pair of runs with the hit
- Becker followed with a sacrifice fly with an additional Case Western Reserve run scoring on an error
- NYU loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the inning
- Misra entered the game and struck out back-to-back batters to earn the save

- CWRU improved to 25-5 against NYU all-time, extending the winning streak in the series to 17 games with the sweep
