The 16th-ranked Case Western Reserve University softball team allowed just one run in 14 innings, defeating Hiram College 3-1 and Calvin University 2-0 on Tuesday afternoon at the Legends Way Complex in Clermont, Florida, as part of THE Spring Games.
The Spartans improved to 9-1 this season, while the Terriers dropped to 1-3 and the Knights fell to 3-3.
Stats and Standouts
- Senior pitcher Devanghi Misra started the first contest, allowing just one run on three hits in three innings
- First-year pitcher Josephine Alspaw (2-0) earned the win in relief, tossing four perfect innings with a pair of strikeouts
- First-year pitcher Camryn Mclelland (4-1) had her first career shutout, tossing seven scoreless innings in the win over Calvin with seven strikeouts
- Sophomore infielder/outfielder Kate Coonan had her team-leading fourth multi-hit game of the season with a single and a double against Hiram, reaching base in her ninth consecutive game to open the season
- First-year infielder Natalie Ching had her second two-hit game in as many days with a pair of singles against Hiram
- Junior outfielder/catcher Alaina Steffes drove in a pair of runs against the Terriers, and junior outfielder Nylah Durham stole a pair of bases
- Junior outfielder Karen Potts hit her team-leading third homer of the season against the Knights
#16 CWRU 3, Hiram 1
- The Terriers loaded the bases with one out in the opening frame on a pair of singles and an error
- Misra induced a lineout and a flyout to escape the inning unscathed
- Steffes doubled home a pair of runs in the following frame, giving the Spartans an early 2-0 lead in the second inning
- Case Western Reserve added to its lead in the third inning when senior infielder Elizabeth Berry doubled, allowing Durham to cross the plate
- A two-out single in the bottom of the stanza put Hiram on the board, making the score 3-1
- Though the Spartans had a hit in each of the following innings, they failed to increase their advantage
- Alspaw retired all 12 batters she faced to close out the victory
#16 CWRU 2, Calvin 0
- Calvin loaded the bases to start the game, but Mclelland prevailed in a 12-pitch at-bat, getting a groundout to end the threat
- Ching was hit by a pitch to lead off the third inning
- Three batters later, Potts smashed a home run to center field, breaking the scoreless tie
- In the final frame, Calvin started a two-out rally with a walk, and the game was extended with a Spartan error
- With the go-ahead run at the plate, Mclelland got a groundout to secure the victory
Spartan Notes
- CWRU improved to 19-2 all-time against Hiram in a series that dates to 1996. The Spartans extended their winning streak in the series to three games
- Of her seven appearances in the circle, Alspaw has allowed a run in just one of them, lowering her earned run average to 1.08 with the career-high four scoreless frames
- Potts made her 100th career start in the first contest, and Durham logged her 100th career appearance (94 starts) in the second game
- The Spartans won their third consecutive game against Calvin, evening the all-time series at four
- The shutout was the second this season for the Case Western Reserve pitching staff
- Potts's home run was the 13th of her career, moving her into a tie for 13th in program history
