The Case Western Reserve University baseball team began a four-game series to kick off its 2026 University Athletic Association schedule on Friday afternoon at Nobby's Ballpark in Cleveland, losing 13-2 in eight innings to Brandeis University.
The Spartans, who received votes in the latest D3baseball.com Top-25 poll, dropped to 11-8 overall with the loss, while the Judges improved to 8-6 following the victory.Â

Graduate student first baseman Eli Westrick and senior catcher Sean Donahue each had two hits in the game for the Spartans.

Junior Tyler Stillson struck out seven batters in the loss, falling to 4-1 on the year. He allowed seven runs on 12 hits and two walks over six innings.

Brandeis scored three runs in the top of the first inning to jump out to an early lead. The Judges added another run in the third and three in the fourth to go ahead 7-0.

Brandeis starter Andrew Tringe faced the minimum through the first three innings and held CWRU scoreless until the bottom of the fifth, when the Spartans put two in scoring position with nobody out and scored their first run of the game on a groundout by senior center fielder Jasiah Harris to cut the lead to 7-1.

Senior outfielder Thomas Downs walked with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh to cut the lead to 7-2, but CWRU left the bases loaded in the inning with back-to-back strikeouts with the tying run in the on-deck circle.

The Judges broke the game open in the top of the eighth with six runs, and CWRU was unable to score in the bottom of the inning, as the game ended early with the run rule in effect.

First-year Emilio Manz had a pinch-hit double in the eighth inning, the first extra-base hit of his career.

CWRU fell to 37-28 all-time against Brandeis. It was just the team's second loss in the last 14 matchups with the Judges, and the Spartans dropped to 13-5 all-time against Brandeis in Cleveland.

CWRU sophomore third baseman Calvin Gelle has now reached base safely in all 18 games he has played in this season.
