The 17th-ranked Case Western Reserve University softball team split a midweek non-conference doubleheader with Denison University on Wednesday night at the Denison Softball Field in Granville, Ohio, winning the first game 7-3 before dropping the second contest 3-0.
The Spartans moved to 13-6 this season, while the Big Red improved to 6-10.
Stats and Standouts
- Senior pitcher Devanghi Misra (5-1) earned the win in the opener, setting a career-high with eight strikeouts in five innings of work. She allowed just one earned run on five hits and two walks
- First-year pitcher Josephine Alspaw (2-2) finished the first game in the circle, allowing one unearned run on two hits and two walks with four strikeouts. In the second contest, she started and suffered the loss, allowing two runs on three hits and three walks in one and one-third innings
- Sophomore infielder Kate Coonan had a career-high three runs batted in during the first contest and had her team-leading eighth multi-hit game of the season
- Junior infielder Karen Potts (two-for-four) and sophomore outfielder Ashley Miller (two-for-three) also both collected a pair of hits in the first game
- Sophomore pitcher Laura Meoli tossed a career-high four and two-third innings in relief in the second game, allowing just one run on four hits and two walks with a strikeout
#17 CWRU 7, Denison 3 (Game 1)
- First-year outfielder Violette Tuma collected her first career RBI with a groundout in the second inning
- Two batters later, Coonan made the score 3-0 with a two-run single
- Miller added a run in the following frame with a single, scoring first-year outfielder Sierra Ejercito
- Denison scored once in the fourth and fifth innings to cut the deficit in half
- With two outs in the sixth inning, sophomore catcher Riley Williams drove in a run with a single to increase the lead to 5-2
- Coonan followed with a run-scoring single of her own to add to the advantage
- The Spartans added an unearned run in the top of the final frame
- The hosts scored in their half, but could not mount a final comeback
Denison 3, #17 CWRU 0 (Game 2)
- CWRU managed just three baserunners against Denison starting pitcher Madilyn Moffitt: one hit, one walk, and one reaching via an error
- The Big Red scored twice in the second inning on a bases-loaded single and once in the fifth frame on a two-out double
- The Spartans did throw out a runner trying to score to keep the deficit at three
Spartan Notes
- The Spartans moved to 16-17 all-time against the Big Red with their eight-game winning streak in the series snapped in the second contest. CWRU still improved to 12-2 in the last 14 games with Denison
- After extending her season-high and team-leading hitting streak to eight games in the opener, Coonan failed to reach base in the second contest
- Junior outfielder Nylah Durham stole at least two bases for the fourth time in 2026 in the first game of the twinbill
