No. 17 Softball Splits on Saturday at Muskingum

The 17th-ranked Case Western Reserve University softball team split a non-conference doubleheader with Muskingum University on Saturday at Donna J. Newberry Field in New Concord, Ohio, dropping the first game 7-4 before responding with a 7-3 victory.

The Spartans crossed the halfway point of the season and moved to 14-7 in 2026. Meanwhile, the Fighting Muskies moved to 14-4 this year.

Stats and Standouts


  • Sophomore infielder Kate Coonan recorded a hit, an RBI, and a steal in the opener and followed with two hits and two runs scored in the second game
  • Senior infielder Elizabeth Berry had a double and RBI in the first contest and drove in a run in the second game
  • Sophomore catcher Riley Williams had her first career two-hit game in the second contest, going two-for-three with an RBI
  • Senior pitcher Devanghi Misra (5-1) allowed six runs in five and two-third innings in the opener, suffering the loss. She pitched the second game in relief, allowing just one run in two and two-third innings with two strikeouts
  • First-year pitcher Josephine Alspaw (3-2) finished the first game with one and one-third scoreless innings before tossing four and one-third innings of two-run ball in the second game with four strikeouts to earn the win

Muskingum 7, #17 CWRU 4 (Game 1)


  • Potts led off the first inning with a double and scored the first run of the game on a double by Berry
  • Muskingum tied the score in the following frame with a solo homer
  • The Spartans took the lead in the bottom of the frame, taking advantage of three Muskingum errors
  • Potts drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, and Coonan made the score 4-1 with a two-out single
  • The Muskies cut the deficit with one run in the third inning, and scored five times in the sixth inning to take a 7-4 lead

#17 CWRU 7, Muskingum 3 (Game 2)


  • Potts scored the first run of the second contest on a double steal, crossing the plate after leading off the frame with a walk
  • The hosts evened the score in the third inning on an infield single
  • Coonan singled with two outs in the bottom of the stanza, and she scored on a double by Berry
  • The senior made the score 3-1 when she crossed the plate on a Muskingum error
  • First-year infielder Natalie Ching led off the fourth frame with a triple and scored on a single by first-year catcher Sophia Becker
  • In the fifth inning, Muskingum scored on a two-out infield single, making the score 4-2
  • CWRU responded in the bottom of the frame, scoring twice on a single by sophomore outfielder Ashley Miller and once on a double by Williams
  • Back-to-back doubles in the sixth made the score 7-3, and Muskingum loaded the bases in the final frame to bring the tying run to the plate
  • However, Alspaw re-entered the contest and struck out the last batter of the game to secure the win

  • Coonan has a hit in 18 of the team's 21 games this year
  • Miller drove in two runs for the second time this season
  • Seven Spartans had hits in the second game of the doubleheader
  • CWRU moved to 3-7 all-time against Muskingum with all three wins coming in the last five games

With its non-conference doubleheader against Mount Union originally scheduled for Sunday postponed, CWRU will next resume conference play on Friday, April 3 with a single game against Emory at 3 p.m.
