Softball Completes Undefeated Opening Weekend with 5-2 Win

The Case Western Reserve University softball team won its fourth consecutive game to open the 2026 season, ending the weekend with a 5-2 victory over Roanoke College on Sunday afternoon at the Catholic University Softball Field on the campus of the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.

The Spartans improved to 4-0, winning all four games in the District of Columbia, while the Maroons dropped to 1-4 this season.

  • Six Spartans had hits in the contest and four drove in runs
  • Junior infielder Karen Potts scored twice and stole three bases, and junior outfielder Nylah Durham also had a career-high three steals
  • First-year catcher Sophia Becker and first-year outfielder Sierra Ejercito each had their first collegiate extra base hit
  • Senior pitcher Devanghi Misra (1-0) allowed two runs on four hits in five innings with seven strikeouts
  • First-year pitcher Josephine Alspaw picked up her second save with two scoreless innings, striking out five batters

  • CWRU, playing as the visiting team, scored twice in the top of the first inning
    • Potts walked to lead off the game, stole second and third, and scored on a throwing error
    • Sophomore outfielder Ashley Miller drove in the second run with a sacrifice fly
  • The Maroons responded in the bottom half with a two-run home run to tie the score at two
  • Two innings later, Ejercito tripled with one out and crossed the plate on a double by Becker
  • Becker scored the team's fourth run of the game on an infield single off the bat of Durham
  • Roanoke had a runner on third with one out in the fifth, but two groundouts prevented a score
  • The Maroons put runners on the corners in the next inning with only one away, but Alspaw struck out two batters to quell the threat
  • Senior infielder Elizabeth Berry drove in an insurance run with a groundout in the final frame, making the score 5-2

  • CWRU stole nine bases in the contest, its most since swiping nine against Coast Guard on March 10, 2024, and tied for the fourth most in program history
  • Misra matched her career high with seven punchouts in the game
  • Alspaw has struck out eight batters in just five innings to start her career
  • The Spartans improved to 2-0 against the Maroons with both matchups coming this weekend
  • Case Western Reserve last started a season 4-0 in 2023 when the squad began the year with a then-program-record 14-game winning streak

The Spartans will travel to Florida for spring break next week, beginning with a pair of contests on Sunday, March 8 against Lake Forest and Alfred in Clermont. CWRU will play 10 games across six days in the Orlando area.
