Case Western Reserve University junior forward Maura Schorr of the women's basketball team and senior Thomas Wagner of the wrestling team received University Athletic Association Athlete of the Week honors based on their performances over the weekend.
Schorr averaged 17.5 points and 9.5 rebounds over a pair of UAA games last weekend, including a win over Brandeis on Sunday. Schorr shot 56.0% (14-of-25) from the floor, including 33.3% (1-of-3) from three-point range, and made 75.0% (6-of-8) of her free throw attempts over the weekend, while adding 0.5 assists, 2.0 blocks, and 2.0 steals per game. In a 73-65 loss to top-ranked NYU on Friday night, Schorr scored 15 points and had 10 rebounds with one assists and a steal in just 20 minutes, making five-of-eight shots overall, connecting on her only three-point attempt, and hitting all four of her free throws. She followed that by registering a double-double with a career-high 20 points and 11 rebounds in a 72-69 win against Brandeis, adding a career-high with four blocks and totaling three steals, while shooting nine-of-17 from the floor. She hit the go-ahead shot with 24 seconds left, made a pair of free throws with five seconds left to expand the lead to three points, and blocked a shot at the buzzer to secure the win for the Spartans.
Schorr has started all 20 games for the Spartans this season, averaging 10.3 points, 7.1 rebounds, 0.8 assists, 1.9 steals, and 1.1 blocks per game. This was her first career UAA Athlete of Week honor of her career.
The Spartans stand at 9-11 overall with a 2-7 UAA record. CWRU will be back on the road next weekend, traveling to face the 17th-ranked University of Chicago on Friday, February 13, at 8:30 p.m. ET in Chicago, and 15th-ranked WashU on Sunday, February 15, at 1 p.m. ET in St. Louis.
Wagner went 4-0 with four pins to win the 157-pound bracket at the 39th Annual John Summa Invitational hosted by Baldwin Wallace University in Berea, Ohio, on Saturday. Wagner started his day with a win by fall in 66 seconds over Dean Poppy of Ohio Northern before he defeated Thiel's Jacob Potts in 3:31 to reach the semifinals. In that round, he bested Alfred State's Owen Cummings in 3:50 to advance to the final of the bracket. This season, Wagner, who is ranked fifth in Region V, has a 32-7 record with 12 pins and six technical falls. It marked his second UAA Athlete of the Week honor of the season and his career.
