Schorr Caps Off Career Day with Game-Winning Shot over Brandeis

Case Western Reserve University junior forward Maura Schorr scored a career-high 20 points, including a go-ahead layup with 24 seconds left to cap off a 72-69 come-from-behind win over the Brandeis University Judges on Sunday at Horsburgh Gymnasium in Cleveland.

Schorr's shot was the high note of an 11-point comeback from the Spartans over the final 2:37 in the game, as CWRU closed out the contest on a 14-0 run to secure the win.

The win put an end to a seven-game losing streak for the Spartans, who improved to 9-11 overall and 2-7 in the University Athletic Association. The Judges fell to 12-8 with a 2-7 UAA ledger as well.

Stats and Standouts


  • Schorr's career-high 20 points came on a nine-of-17 shooting effort. She added 11 rebounds for the double-double and also set a personal best with four blocks, including one on the final shot attempt of the game for the Judges.

  • Senior guard/forward Emily Plachta scored 17 points with eight rebounds, two assists, and a pair of blocks.

  • Junior guard Mya Hartjes dished out eight assists, one shy of her career-high mark, and had 16 points, six rebounds, and two steals in a well-rounded effort.

  • Junior guard Jordyn Call made three three-point attempts and finished with 11 points and two steals, including one to set up the eventual game-winning basket.

  • CWRU finished the game shooting 40.6% (28-69) overall and 33.3% (8-24) from long range, while Brandeis shot 40.9% (27-66) overall and 46.7% (7-15) from behind the three-point line. The Spartans finished with edges in points off turnovers (15-10), points in the paint (38-28), second-chance points (18-10), and fast-break points (15-5).

First Period


  • After Plachta  opened the scoring with a three-pointer on the Spartans' first possession of the game, Brandeis responded with an 8-0 run to take a five-point lead with 6:51 on the clock.

  • CWRU responded with baskets from Plachta and Schorr to pull within a point, and eventually tied the game at 10-10 after a three-pointer by Call with 4:59 to play in the opening quarter.

  • Brandeis regained the lead with a basket, but CWRU tied the game again with a layup from Hartjes with 2:49 to play, and then layups on back-to-back possessions from Schorr gave CWRU a 16-12 lead with 2:07 left, and led 16-14 after 10 minutes of play.

  • Schorr led the Spartans with six points, six rebounds, and two steals in the opening quarter.

Second Period


  • The Spartans maintained a lead for most of the second quarter and led by six, 27-21, following a layup by Schorr with 5:18 on the clock, but Brandeis followed with nine-straight points, taking the lead with 2:31 left in the half and going ahead 30-27 with 2:13 on the clock.

  • Plachta broke the run up with a free throw at the 2:13 mark, but the Judges were able to close out the first half with a 36-31 lead.

Third Period


  • An 11-2 run to start the second half put the Judges ahead 47-33 by the 6:44 mark.

  • The Spartans trailed by 17 points, 52-35, with 4:53 left, but climbed back into the game with 10-straight points, pulling back within seven after a Hartjes layup with 52 seconds in the period, and headed into the final frame down 53-45.

Fourth Period


  • A free throw by Hartjes to open the fourth made it a seven-point game with 9:42 to play, but the Judges answered with a three to go back ahead by 10, 58-48.

  • CWRU trailed by 11, 69-58, with just 2:37 to play before Call hit a three-pointer to begin the, and a three-pointer by Plachta with 1:09 left made it a one-possession game, 69-66. After a pair of missed free throws from the Judges, Hartjes made a layup with 34 seconds left to pull CWRU within a point, 69-68.

  • Brandeis called a timeout, but its inbound pass was stolen by Call, leading to a layup by Schorr with 24 seconds left to put CWRU ahead 70-69, its first lead since the second quarter.

  • The Judges had a chance to regain the lead but missed a jumper with 10 seconds left, and after the CWRU collected the rebound, Schorr was fouled and converted both free throws to put CWRU ahead by three.

  • Brandeis had a final chance to tie the game, but Schorr blocked a three-point attempt as time expired to secure the win for the Spartans.

Spartan Notes


  • With the victory, CWRU head coach Jennifer Reimer, who already ranks as the winningest coach in program history, moved just one win away from 200 career victories as the Spartans' head coach.

  • There were four total lead changes and three ties during Sunday's game.

  • Schorr's double-double was her fourth of the season and the seventh of her career. She is averaging 10.3 points and 7.1 rebounds per game this season.

  • CWRU bested Brandeis for the first time in the last four matchups and improved to 29-37 all-time against the Judges.
