The Case Western Reserve University softball team won two games on Friday at the Catholic University Softball Field in Washington, D.C., defeating the Catholic University of America 4-3 in eight innings and taking down Roanoke College 4-1.
The Spartans will begin the season with a record of 2-0. The host Cardinals fell to 4-1 while the Maroons dropped to 0-3.
Stats and Standouts
- Senior infielder Elizabeth Berry went two-for-four with a pair of walks and two runs batted in across the two games
- Sophomore outfielder Ashley Miller had a team-high three hits, including a double, and drove in three runs
- First-year two-way player Camryn Mclelland (1-0) had a single and a double at the plate, stole a base, and pitched six innings with seven strikeouts while allowing just one run
- Senior pitcher Devanghi Misra did not allow an earned run in six innings, recording seven strikeouts
- First-year pitcher Josephine Alspaw (1-0) made two relief appearances, picking up a win and a save across three shutout innings. She allowed just one hit and one walk
CWRU 4, Catholic 3 (8 inn.)
- The Cardinals took an early 2-0 in the first inning, capitalizing on two Spartan errors
- Catholic added an unearned run in the second on a two-out single
- The Spartans tied the score in the following frame
- Sophomore outfielder Kate Coonan drove in a run with a bases-loaded single
- Berry followed with a two-run single, chasing the Catholic starting pitcher
- CWRU had two runners in scoring position with two outs in the sixth but were unable to score
- First-year catcher Sophia Becker moved the automatic runner over with a bunt to lead off the extra frame
- Miller drove in the go-ahead run with a single up the middle
- Alspaw worked around a two-out walk to secure the win in the bottom half of the stanza
CWRU 4, Roanoke 1
- CWRU scored three runs in the bottom half of the fourth inning to break a scoreless tie
- After Berry singled and junior infielder Karen Potts walked, Miller delivered a two-out, two-run double
- Mclelland followed with an infield single to plate Miller and make the lead 3-0
- Roanoke scored in the following half inning, but Mclelland stranded a pair of runners in scoring position with one out to limit the damage
- The Maroons loaded the bases in the sixth inning and were unable to score
- However, the Spartans added a run in the bottom of the frame on a Roanoke error
- Alspaw recorded all three outs in the final frame, include two punchouts, to earn her first career save
Spartan Notes
- In addition to Alspaw, Becker, and Mclelland, first-years Sierra Ejercito, Violette Tuma, and Natalie Ching made their collegiate debuts in the first game
- Misra recorded career highs in innings pitched and strikeouts against Catholic
- The Spartans improved to 2-0 all-time against the Cardinals
- The meeting was the first ever on the softball diamond between Case Western Reserve and Roanoke
- CWRU has won its season-opening contest in each of the last four seasons
