Spartan Digest - Winter Week 14

A preview of the Case Western Reserve University varsity athletic events for the 14th week of the winter season (January 26-February 1) and a recap of the events from the previous week (January 19-25). Schedule is subject to change with updates posted on athletics.case.edu when they are known.

Last Week's Recap

#23 Wrestling (1-0)

#16/#24 Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving (1-1/1-1)

  • Defeated Oberlin College in a dual meet on Saturday at Veale Natatorium in Cleveland, defeating the Yeomen 229-64 and the Yeowomen 245-49
  • Fell to top-ranked and fifth-ranked Kenyon on Friday night in Gambier, Ohio, with the women's team dropping a 218-82 contest and the men's team losing 153-143
  • Prior to Saturday's meet, the CWRU teams celebrated their 19 graduating members as part of Senior Day

Men's and Women's Track and Field

  • Won three events at the Leo Miller/Hayden Snow Meet of Champions hosted by John Carroll University on Saturday in University Heights, Ohio
  • First-year Gianna Phipps took first in the 400-meter dash and was the anchor on the 4x400-meter relay that included first-year Samaria Benochi, first-year Reid Smith, and senior Melanie Taylor
  • Senior Michelle Lee placed first in the weight throw with the top mark in the University Athletic Association this season

Men's Basketball (0-2, 0-2 UAA)

  • Dropped a pair of conference road contests, falling to third-ranked Emory 72-63 on Friday night in Atlanta and Rochester 97-88 on Sunday afternoon in Rochester, New York
  • First-year forward Alex Vincent averaged a double-double, scoring 10.5 points per game on 41.7% (10-of-24) shooting overall, while collecting 13.0 rebounds per contest

Women's Basketball (0-2, 0-2 UAA)

  • Lost twice in road conference matchups last weekend, losing to 19th-ranked Emory 90-46 on Friday night in Atlanta and falling to Rochester 75-70 on Sunday afternoon in Rochester, New York
  • Junior forward Maura Schorr averaged team-highs with 16.0 points and 9.0 rebounds per game, shooting 45.2% (14-of-31) overall and 50.0% (2-of-4) from behind the three-point line, while making both of her free throw attempts
