Spartan Club Athletes of the Week for Sept. 29: Sam DeTillio & Kalli Wall

The Spartan Club, comprised of Case Institute of Technology (CIT), Western Reserve University (WRU) and Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) alumni, parents of current students, faculty and staff, and friends of the University, is aimed at helping foster and honor the proud tradition of athletics at the University, while also supporting the current student-athletes. Case Western Reserve University junior Sam DeTillio, a quarterback on the football team, and senior Kalli Wall, an outside hitter of the volleyball team, have been named the Spartan Club Athletes of the Week for their performances this past week.

DeTillio had another strong performance for the Spartans during the team's 55-0 win at Bethany College on Saturday. DeTillio completed 12-of-18 passes for 248 yards and a career-high three touchdowns without throwing an interception, while also leading the team with a career-best 84 rushing yards on 10 carries. He got the Spartans on the board with 13:26 left in the first quarter with a 37-yard pass to Beau Wolf. In the second quarter, he hit Matthew Bittel with a 20-yard touchdown strike to extend the team's lead to 24-0, and then completed a 53-yard touchdown pass to Brian Caldwell Jr. to extend the team's advantage to 38-0 with 12:34 left in the third. DeTillio has completed 63.0% of his passes this season for 810 yards with five touchdowns and one interception while rushing for a team-high 133 yards with two touchdowns. The Spartans stand at 1-2-1 this season following Saturday's win.

The Spartans will be back on the road next weekend, traveling to Latrobe, Pennsylvania for a PAC matchup against Saint Vincent College. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.

Wall led the Spartan attack during the team's 1-2 effort at the first University Athletic Association Round Robin hosted by Emory University in Atlanta over the weekend. Wall had a team-high 49 kills in 12 sets (4.08 per set) and added nine digs and nine total blocks for 54.0 points in three matches. She had at least 14 kills in all three matches, putting down 18 in a five-set win over Brandeis, 17 in a four-set loss to 25th-ranked Carnegie Mellon, and 14 in three sets against the ninth-ranked hosts. Wall has 265 kills this season (3.68 per set) and a .242 attacking percentage. The Spartans moved to 8-11 overall and 1-2 in conference play following the weekend.

CWRU returns to non-conference play with a pair of matches in Delaware, Ohio, on Saturday, October 4. The Spartans will face Denison University at 2 p.m. and host Ohio Wesleyan University at 4 p.m.

The Spartan Club Athletes of the Week are selected by the CWRU Department of Athletics each Monday, based on their performance during the previous week of competition.

Honorable Mentions:

Sophomore defender Kinzly Gootman (women's soccer) played all 180 minutes on the Spartan backline during the fourth-ranked team's 2-0-0 week. In a shutout win over Penn State Behrend on Wednesday, Gootman and the CWRU defense held the Lions to five shots, posting their eighth clean sheet of the year. Though the team allowed a goal in a 4-1 win over Mount Union on Saturday, the Purple Raiders managed just two shots in the contest. Gootman has logged 870 of a possible 900 minutes this season, helping the Spartans hold opponents to two goals and 48 shots in 10 games. Case Western Reserve improved to 9-0-1 with the two victories.

The Spartans wrap up non-conference play with a home matchup against Baldwin Wallace on Tuesday, September 30 at 7:30 p.m.

First-year linebacker Jack Griffiths (football) notched the first interception of his career during the team's 55-0 win at Bethany College on Saturday. His interception came with 2:27 left in the first quarter, and he returned it 13 yards to give CWRU possession on the Bisons' 20-yard line, leading to a Spartan touchdown one play later that helped the team take a 24-0 lead. Griffiths finished the game with two tackles (one solo) and added a pass breakup, and has nine tackles (four solo) with a fumble recovery, an interception, and a pass breakup this season. 

Sophomore defensive lineman Greg Hanson Jr. (football) helped the Spartans' defense shut out Bethany College 55-0 on Saturday afternoon in Bethany, West Virginia. Hanson finished the game with five tackles (three solo), including 2.5 sacks, a forced fumble, and a quarterback hurry, all career-high marks. His highlight play came in the third quarter of the game when he sacked the Bethany quarterback for a 20-yard loss and forced a fumble that was recovered by the Spartans. Through four games this season, Hanson has totaled 10 tackles (four solo) with 2.5 sacks and a forced fumble. 

Junior forward Ohta Kamiya (men's soccer) scored his fifth goal of the season during the 17th-ranked Spartans' 2-1 loss to Otterbein on Sunday. With the score tied at zero in the 25th minute, Kamiya tallied an unassisted score to give CWRU the lead. He pulled into the team lead with his fifth goal in 2025 and it was the seventh of his career. The Spartans dropped to 6-1-3 following a 0-1-1 week.

With the non-conference schedule complete, CWRU will focus on University Athletic Association play for the remainder of 2025. The Spartans will host the University of Rochester at 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 4 at DiSanto Field.

Junior George Kosseifi, graduate student Bryce Ware, and junior Trey Lambright (men's tennis) each reached the semifinals of the 2025 ITA Fall Central Region Championship in Kalamazoo, Michigan, over the weekend. Kosseifi, the ninth-seeded player in the singles draw, went 4-1 in singles play, including wins over 17th-ranked Anthony Payiavlas of Denison in the round of 32, fourth-ranked Eric Kuo of WashU in the round of 16, and ninth-ranked Maximo Llamas Castellanos of Kenyon in the quarterfinals. His tournament run came to an end against top-seeded Kael Shah in the semifinals. Ware and Lambright, the ninth-seeded pairing in the doubles draw, upset top-seeded Shah and Ethan Green of Denison in the round of 16 and went on to best ninth-seeded Rafael Rin and Augusto Ghidini of Wabash in the quarterfinals, before falling in a nailbiter to Albert Mackey and Heyang Li of Chicago, 8-7 (6).

The Spartans are scheduled to conclude their fall season at the Zach Barden Memorial Invite at the University of Toledo in Toledo, Ohio, on November 14-16.

Senior middle blocker Amanda Ngo (volleyball) averaged one block per set for the Spartans during the 1-2 weekend at the first University Athletic Association Round Robin hosted by Emory in Atlanta. Ngo had seven block assists and five solo blocks in 12 sets for CWRU across the three matches, including a five-block performance in a four-set loss to 25th-ranked Carnegie Mellon. Ngo also totaled 29 kills with a .368 attacking percentage, putting down 13 in a five-set win over Brandeis and 11 against the Tartans. This season, she has 61 total blocks (0.85 per set) and 191 kills (2.65 per set) with a .300 attacking percentage. 

Senior forward/midfielder Alexis Sassower (women's soccer) scored a goal and tallied an assist during the fourth-ranked Spartans' 2-0-0 week. Sassower struck for her third goal of the season in the 83rd minute of a 2-0 victory over Penn State Behrend on Wednesday night. It was the 12th goal of her career. On Saturday in a 4-1 win over Mount Union, Sassower assisted on the team's fourth goal of the contest, the 13th helper of her career.
