Spartan Club Athletes of the Week for Sept. 2: Jacob Slater & Jamie Goldfarb

The Spartan Club, comprised of Case Institute of Technology (CIT), Western Reserve University (WRU) and Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) alumni, parents of current students, faculty and staff, and friends of the University, is aimed at helping foster and honor the proud tradition of athletics at the University, while also supporting the current student-athletes. Case Western Reserve University junior Jacob Slater, a member of the men's cross country team, and senior Jamie Goldfarb, a midfielder on the women's soccer team, have been named the Spartan Club Athletes of the Week for their performances this past week.

Junior Jacob Slater set the men's 6K meet record at the 2025 Bill Sudeck Invitational at the University Farm in Hunting Valley, Ohio, on Friday afternoon. Slater was the top finisher among 35 runners in the season-opening race, crossing the finish line in a time of 18:59.45 to narrowly beat out sophomore teammate Donovan Crowley by 0.13 seconds. His time was a 55-second improvement on his previous personal-best time on the course and broke the previous meet-record time of 19:04.6 set by John Carroll's Barrett Schaetzle in 2022. Slater's performance was a part of a dominating season-opening performance for the Spartans, who bested 28th-ranked John Carroll 15-50 at the meet.

The Spartans will be off from intercollegiate competition for the next two weeks. CWRU will host its annual Alumni Meet on Saturday, September 13 at the University Farm, before taking part in a pair of meets the following weekend. The Spartans will be at the All-Ohio Classic on Friday, September 19, with the team's top runners heading to the Pre-National Meet in Spartanburg, South Carolina, on Saturday, September 20.

Case Western Reserve senior midfielder Jamie Goldfarb scored four goals across two games, including a hat trick, for the Spartans during a 2-0-0 opening weekend. Goldfarb, and CWRU, started the season with a statement win, defeating Franciscan 7-0 at home on Friday night. She scored three goals during the contest, all in the first half, to record her first career hat trick and multi-goal game. Goldfarb struck in the sixth, 22nd, and 42nd minute against the Barons and totaled just four shots in the contest. On Sunday afternoon during a 6-0 victory over Allegheny, she netted her fourth goal of the season in the 12th minute of play to put Case Western Reserve ahead 2-0. In 55 career matches, Goldfarb has 12 goals and four assists. Her four goals this season are already the most for her in any season.

CWRU will play its next five matches on the road, beginning with a trip to University Heights, Ohio, on Wednesday, September 3 to play crosstown rival John Carroll at 7:05 p.m.

The Spartan Club Athletes of the Week are selected by the CWRU Department of Athletics each Monday, based on their performance during the previous week of competition.

Honorable Mention:

Sophomore midfielder Mitchell Fein (men's soccer) netted his first collegiate goal during a 1-0 victory over Juniata on Sunday afternoon in Pennsylvania. In the 74th minute of a scoreless game, Fein headed a ball off a long free kick from Owen Guffey past the Juniata goalkeeper and into the back of the net. In addition to his first career goal, the score was also the first game winner of Fein's career. CWRU went 2-0-0 during its opening weekend, shutting out both Juniata and Franciscan earlier in the week.

The Spartans will begin a four-match homestand on Saturday, September 6, welcoming Penn State Behrend to DiSanto Field at 1 p.m.

First-year defender Mia Modrovich (women's soccer) played all 180 minutes on the Spartan backline during a pair of shutouts last weekend. Modrovich made her first collegiate start in a 7-0 victory over Franciscan on Friday night, helping Case Western Reserve hold the Barons to just three shots in the contest with only one coming on goal. On Sunday afternoon, Modrovich and the Spartan defense were even better, not allowing Allegheny one shot attempt in a 6-0 victory.

First-year Halina Tompkins (women's cross country) made a statement in the first race of her collegiate career, setting a women's 4K meet record at the 2025 Bill Sudeck Invitational on Friday afternoon at the University Farm in Hunting Valley, Ohio. Tompkins was the top finisher among the 20 competitors in the race, crossing the finish line in a time of 14:42.39. The time bested the previous course record mark of 14:43.6 set by Albion's Cassie Vince in 2017. It marked the third straight season that a Spartan has won the race, as the CWRU women cruised to a 15-50 win over John Carroll at the event.

Senior goalkeeper Bradley Winter (men's soccer) recorded a pair of shutouts to help the Spartans begin the 2025 campaign with a 2-0-0 record. In the season-opening contest at Franciscan on Friday night, Winter faced 10 shots and made a pair of saves during a 2-0 victory over the Barons in Steubenville, Ohio. On Sunday afternoon, he saved three shots to keep the Eagles of Juniata off the board in a 1-0 road victory for CWRU. Winter has five saves across 180 minutes of action in 2025. In his career, he has 14 shutouts, which is tied for the second most in program history.

Senior middle blocker Amanda Ngo (volleyball) led the Spartans with 15 total blocks in four matches during the team's trip to California last weekend. Ngo blocked eight attacks and recorded 10 kills during a five-set loss to Chapman on Saturday afternoon. The previous day, she had a season-high 12 kills while adding three blocks and four digs in a three-set loss to 14th-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. In addition to leading the team in blocks, Ngo is second on the squad with 38 kills this season (2.71 per set). CWRU fell to 0-4 following the West Coast trip.

The Spartans return to Ohio to face the University of Mount Union in Alliance on Wednesday, September 3 at 7 p.m.

Senior outside hitter Kalli Wall (volleyball) totaled 47 kills across four matches for the Spartans during their trip to California last weekend. Her best performance came on Saturday when she recorded a career-high 23 kills in a five-set loss to Chapman. She added seven digs and eight blocks during the match, which also set a career high. Later in the day, Wall had 10 kills in a loss to seventh-ranked La Verne, and on Friday, she recorded nine kills and six digs in a loss to Whittier.
