Volleyball Sweeps Oberlin in Return to Horsburgh

In its first home match in nearly two weeks, the Case Western Reserve University volleyball team defeated Oberlin College in three sets, 25-22, 25-12, 25-17, at Horsburgh Gymnasium in Cleveland on Wednesday night.

The Spartans improved to 5-8 this season, while the Yeowomen dropped to 2-8.

Stats and Standouts

  • Senior outside hitter Kalli Wall led the team with 12 kills and had a .600 attacking percentage
  • Senior middle blocker Amanda Ngo added nine kills and a team-high four total blocks
  • Sophomore setters Elena Esquivel (20 assists, 13 digs, six kills, two blocks, two service aces) and Avery Basinger (15 assists) split time directing the team's offense
  • Sophomore defensive specialist Sophia Datto contributed 12 digs and two service aces

First Set (25-22)

  • The teams battled early in the first set, with Oberlin holding a 9-7 advantage
  • A kill by Ngo started a 5-0 CWRU run that included a pair of kills by Wall
  • The Yeowomen won seven of the next 10 points to reclaim the advantage at 16-15
  • Ngo tied the score with a kill and gave Case Western Reserve the lead with a block
  • Three consecutive points by the visitors put Oberlin ahead, 19-17
  • The Spartans responded with three points in a row to take the lead
  • After the visitors tied the score, kills by Wall and senior middle blocker Kiya Levy put the Spartans ahead 22-20
  • Oberlin tied the score at 22, but following a timeout, the hosts closed the set with three consecutive points

Second Set (25-12)

  • The visitors led 6-4 early in the second set, but the Spartans won 13 of the next 15 points to take a commanding 17-8 lead
  • Levy and Ngo each had two kills during the run
  • Following two quick Oberlin points, CWRU closed the set with an 8-2 run

Third Set (25-17)

  • With a 4-0 run early in the third stanza, the Spartans pulled ahead 11-6
  • Esquivel and first-year outside hitter Elena Stone each had a kill during the brief run
  • The Yeowomen were able to cut their deficit to three, 12-9, but two kills by Wall and service ace from Datto gave the Spartans a six-point advantage
  • Back-to-back kills by Wall, her 11th and 12th of the match, gave CWRU its largest lead of the set to that point, 17-10
  •  A 4-1 Oberlin run cut the team's deficit to four, 20-16, but that would be the closest the visitors would get as the Spartans ended the match with five of the next six points
