The Case Western Reserve University volleyball team lost to Baldwin Wallace University in four sets (19-25, 25-15, 25-27, 25-27) on Wednesday night at Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea, Ohio.
The Spartans fell to 2-7 this season, while the Yellow Jackets improved to 3-4.
First Set
- BW opened the match with a 6-0 and led by as many as 10 points, 18-8, later in the set
- Down eight and facing set point, CWRU won three consecutive rallies to cut the deficit to five
- The Yellow Jackets won the next point to claim the first set
Second Set
- Case Western Reserve led 9-4 early in the stanza
- Baldwin Wallace trimmed the deficit to two, 10-8
- The Spartans responded with a 7-2 run, which included two kills by senior middle blocker Amanda Ngo
- After a pair of BW points, CWRU took six of the next eight rallies to claim a 10-point advantage
- First-year defensive specialist Thea Beran and sophomore defensive specialist Sophia Datto recorded service aces during the run
- The visitors tied the match score at one by forcing an attacking error for the 25th point
Third Set
- Ahead 11-10, the Spartans took advantage of six consecutive BW attacking errors to lead 17-10
- The Jackets tied the score at 21 on a CWRU attacking error
- Ngo put down a kill to give the visitors the lead again, but Baldwin Wallace reclaimed the advantage with two points in a row
- The Spartans tied the score at 23, 24, and 25, but back-to-back kills gave the hosts the crucial third set
Fourth Set
- Consecutive kills by first-year outside hitter Elena Stone gave CWRU a 19-15 advantage in the fourth set, its largest of the stanza
- BW battled, winning five of the next six points to tie the score at 20
- Sophomore setter Elena Esquivel used a kill to give the Spartans the lead, but BW quickly reclaimed it
- The teams then traded the next eight points with the Spartans tying the score at 22, 23, 24, and 25
- Two Baldwin Wallace kills ended the match
Spartan Notes
- Wall led the team with 12 kills
- Senior middle blocker Kiya Levy had six kills with no errors on nine attacks
- Ngo finished with eight kills, eight digs, and five blocks
- Esquivel paced the squad with 28 assists and added nine digs
- Datto had a team-high 24 digs
- Case Western Reserve dropped to 6-7 against Baldwin Wallace since 2012
