The 25th-ranked Case Western Reserve University volleyball team lost twice on the second day of the 2025 Pacific Coast Classic at the Sports Science and Athletics Pavilion in La Verne, California, on Saturday, falling to Chapman University in five sets and seventh-ranked University of La Verne in three sets.
The Spartans dropped to 0-4 on the season, while the Panthers improved to 2-0 and the Leopards moved to 3-0.
Senior Kalli Wall had a career-high 23 kills and eight blocks in the first match of the day and totaled 33 kills and nine blocks across the two matches. Senior Amanda Ngo added 10 kills and eight blocks against Chapman and eight kills and two blocks against La Verne.
#25 CWRU 2, Chapman 3 (25-23, 25-16, 21-25, 23-25, 11-15)
Set 1
- The Spartans used an early 4-1 run to take a 9-4 advantage to start the match. Ngo had a pair of kills and a block during the run, and senior Kiya Levy added a kill and a block
- The Panthers cut the deficit to one, 10-9, by winning five of the next six points after a timeout. However, sophomore Avery Basinger ended the run with a kill. It was the first of four consecutive points for CWRU, extending the team's lead to five
- After dropping the deficit to two twice in the middle of the set, Chapman took advantage of a Case Western Reserve attacking error to make the score 19-17 in favor of the Spartans. Junior Katie Yanni put down a kill, and Basinger followed with a service ace to extend the lead back to four and prompt a Panther timeout
- Following the break, Chapman won five of the next seven points, making the score 23-22. Wall delivered a kill, but the Panthers responded with a kill of their own. Sophomore Madeline Halter ended the set with a kill, giving CWRU a 25-23 victory in the stanza
Set 2
- The Spartans started the second set with a 9-4 run, using three kills each from Wall and Yanni and a pair of kills from Halter to take the early lead
- Back-to-back CWRU blocks put the team ahead 11-5, and a 5-2 Spartan run increased the advantage to nine
- Later in the set, Wall delivered a kill to make the score 23-13, the largest lead of the set. She later ended the stanza with two consecutive kills, her 14th and 15th of the afternoon
Set 3
- Leading by just one early in the third set, Chapman won five of the next six points to take a 14-9 lead in an attempt to keep the match going
- A kill by Wall and block by Wall and Ngo cut the deficit to three, but a quick Panther run increased the Californians' advantage to five again
- Chapman earned its largest lead of the set, 20-14, on a Spartan attacking error, prompting a timeout from CWRU. After the break, the teams traded kills before sophomore Colleen Nudd delivered a kill and junior Sude Naz Item had a service ace to make the score 21-17
- Chapman earned a service on set point by taking three of the next four points, holding a 24-18 advantage. CWRU fought off three consecutive set points by forcing a pair of attacking errors and receiving a kill from Ngo
- Chapman called timeout and ended the set on the next rally with a kill
Set 4
- Wall recorded her 20th kill of the match on the third point, giving CWRU a 2-1 advantage. Chapman used a 5-0 run to take a 7-4 lead in the set before the teams traded the next eight points. Ngo and Halter delivered kills and the Spartans forced an attacking error to drop the deficit to one, 12-11
- Holding a 16-15 lead, the Panthers won the next three points. However the Spartans responded with three consecutive points of their own, including a kill and block by Levy, to keep the margin at just one, 19-18
- Chapman went ahead by three, 23-20 on a service ace. Case Western Reserve gained points on an attacking error and ace of its own to again pull within one. A Spartan error made the score 24-22, but Ngo delivered her ninth kill of the match to continue the set
- Chapman closed the set out with a kill, forcing a decisive fifth stanza
Set 5
- The Panthers quickly gained a 3-1 lead in the final set, but a Ngo kill started a 5-0 Spartan run that gave CWRU a 6-3 lead. First-year Thea Beran served back-to-back aces to put the team ahead by three
- Chapman responded with three consecutive points to tie the score at six. The teams traded points, and the Panthers blocked a Spartan attack to take an 8-7 advantageÂ
- After Halter tied the score at eight with a kill, Chapman scored the next two points with a kill and service ace to prompt a Spartan timeout
- Following the break, the Panthers extended their lead with an ace. Levy delivered a kill to cut the deficit to two, but Chapman responded with a kill and an ace to make the score 13-9
- CWRU forced an attacking error following a timeout, however Chapman won the following point to serve for the match. Ngo blocked a Panther attack to keep the Spartans alive
- The Panthers then ended the set and the match with a kill
#25 CWRU 0, #7 La Verne 3 (15-25, 22-25, 12-25)
Set 1
- La Verne started the match with an 8-1 run and did not concede the lead for the remainder of the first set
- CWRU cut the deficit to five, 9-4, and six, 21-15, but the Leopards won the final four points to take the first set
Set 2
- Trailing 12-6 in the second stanza, CWRU used an 9-5 run to cut the deficit to two. Wall had three kills during the stretch, with Ngo and Levy each adding one
- The teams traded the next six points, before an attacking error brought Case Western Reserve within one point, 20-19. The Spartans forced an attacking error three rallies later, tying the score at 21
- The Leopards closed the set by winning four of the final five points to take a 2-0 lead in the match
Set 3
- With the hosts leading 6-5, La Verne used a 6-1 run to take a six-point lead in the final set
- The Spartans cut their deficit to four, 13-9, but the Leopards won 12 of the final 15 points to win the match
Spartan Notes
- The match marked the first-ever meeting between CWRU and La Verne
- The Spartans won their only previous match in program history with Chapman, defeating the Panthers 3-1 in 2010 in Pomona, California
- Wall's previous career high in kills was 16, which she did most recently against WashU on September 28, 2024. Her prior career high in blocks was six, most recently against Dubuque on November 21, 2024
- Wall's 23 kills in the first match were the most by a Spartan since Rea Marfatia had 23 against Albion on September 13, 2024
- Halter recorded a career-high 11 kills in the first match of the day, besting her previous high of nine from November 6, 2024, against John Carroll
