Behind a pair of hat tricks from seniors Jamie Goldfarb and Maggie Farra, the Case Western Reserve University women's soccer team opened the 2025 season with a 7-0 win over Franciscan University of Steubenville on Friday night at DiSanto Field in Cleveland.
The Spartans improved to 1-0-0 on the campaign while the Barons fell to 0-1-0.
Goldfarb and Farra are the first pair of teammates in CWRU to have a hat trick in the same game. It was the first multi-goal game of Goldfarb's career and the second for Farra after she scored twice against Asbury on October 21, 2022, in an 11-0 win. First-year Emily Callanen scored the seventh Case Western Reserve goal, the first of her career. Four Spartans added assists in the game. Sophomore Ellie Palaian earned her first career start, win, and shutout in front of the net for CWRU.
First Half
- Goldfarb opened the scoring, giving the team a 1-0 lead in the sixth minute. She collected a saved shot from senior Molly Shamah and finished into an empty net. Shamah was credited with her first of two assists in the game on the play
- Goldfarb scored her second of the evening in the 26th minute, gaining possession at the top of the box, sprinting toward the goal, and finishing with her left foot in the top corner of the goal
- Just 47 seconds later, Farra put the Spartans ahead 3-0 with her first goal of the game. She received a pass from senior Alexis Sassower about 25 yards away from the goal, took one step, and fired a shot just in front of the post
- Goldfarb completed the hat trick in the first half, scoring in the 42nd minute on a cross from first-year Izzy Probst
- Callanen gave the team a 5-0 advantage heading into the break with a goal in the 44th minute, gaining possession in the box, spinning, and shooting the ball past the diving goalkeeper
Second Half
- Farra scored in the 49th minute, receiving a cross from Shamah in the nine-yard box and finishing in the bottom corner
- She finished her hat trick, and completed the Spartan scoring, in the 56th minute. Senior Ceci Dapino lobbed a pass from midfield to Farra, who was running down the middle of the pitch. She won the race to the ball and beat the goalkeeper in a one-on-one showdown, making the score 7-0
- Franciscan had their first shot in the game in the 70th minute. An attempt by Ryan Walters was saved by Palaian which resulted in a corner and another unsuccessful shot attempt by the Barons
