A young core of talented players helped lead the Case Western Reserve University women's basketball conclude the 2024-25 season with seven wins.
CWRU finished the season with a 7-18 overall record, including a 2-12 mark in University Athletic Association games, as the squad finished the season eighth in the conference. The team averaged 58.9 points per game during the season while shooting 34.9% from the floor with the offense being characterized by its propensity to shoot the three, averaging 27.1 three-point attempts per game, the 20th-most among Division III teams during the season. Defensively, the Spartans allowed 64.6 points per game and blocked 5.2 shots per contest, the 14th-most among Division III teams and second in the UAA.
Leading the way for the Spartans throughout the year was sophomore guard Mya Hartjes, who emerged as one of the top players in the conference and secured All-UAA Second Team honors following the season. She led the squad with 12.4 points and 3.7 assists per game while shooting a team-high 36.1% from three-point range and 34.7% overall. Junior guard/forward Emily Plachta added 11.5 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 1.5 steals per game, while sophomore guard Maura Schorr made a leap forward in her second year, scoring 8.3 points with 6.8 rebounds and a team-high 1.8 steals per contest. Senior Evie Miller provided the Spartans with a presence in the post on both ends of the floor, scoring 7.9 points per game and leading the team with 8.2 rebounds and 2.4 blocks per game.
Miller's 60 blocks during the season were the 20th-most among Division III players in 2024-25 and the second-most in a season in program history, just seven blocks away from the program record. She ended her career with 127 blocks, the fourth-most among Spartans all time.
Several other players provided major contributions for the Spartans during the year. Senior guard Nyah Moore was one of just three players (along with Hartjes and Miller) to start all 25 games and averaged 4.5 points per game. Before suffering a season-ending injury, junior guard Maya Roberts started 12 games and played in 14 overall, scoring 7.9 points with 3.7 rebounds per game and shooting a team-high 46.1% from the floor. Junior guard Emi Hutter-DeMarco came off the bench in all 25 games and scored 1.2 points with 1.1 assists per game, while sophomore guard Jordyn Call appeared in 22 games and provided a spark off the bench, averaging 5.3 points per contest.
The Spartans' season was highlighted by several wins during the year. On December 29, CWRU bested Transylvania, the 2024 Division III runner-up, 67-53 on the Pioneers' home court at the Gratz Park Private Wealth Holiday Tournament in Lexington, Kentucky behind 18 points from Plachta and 16 from Hartjes. CWRU went on to best Washington University (Mo.), then ranked 13th in Division III, 64-57 behind a career-high 22-point effort from Plachta. It was just the team's second victory all-time against the Bears in St. Louis.
Earlier in the season, CWRU broke the program record for points scored in a game during a 108-52 win against Pitt.-Greensburg on December 19 at Horsburgh Gymnasium. The 108-point output bested the previous school record of 105 points against Wilmington on November 30, 2002, while the 56-point margin of victory was the largest in a game in program history, besting the previous program record of 55 points during an 85-30 win over Notre Dame (Ohio) during the 1979-80 campaign. It was the team's second win of the campaign against Pitt.-Greensburg after beating the Panthers 90-46 in Greensburg earlier in the year.
Other wins for the Spartans during the campaign came at Allegheny on November 9 (60-52), at Mount Union on November 26 (58-46), and against Rochester at home on February 7 (53-42).
In addition to the team's success on the court, several players were recognized for their academic achievements. Four members of the team – Hartjes, Miller, Moore, and Plachta – were selected to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team, while nine members of the team – Call, sophomore guard Olivia Franciscus, Hartjes, Hutter-DeMarco, Miller, Moore, Plachta, Roberts, and sophomore forward Biz Watson – received UAA Winter All-Academic honors.
