UAA Champions!!! #21 CWRU Clinches 2025 Conference Title with Win over Brandeis

The 21st-ranked Case Western Reserve University baseball team secured the 2025 University Athletic Association Championship and the automatic bid associated with it with a 25-18 win over Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts on Saturday afternoon.

The win, combined with a loss by the University of Chicago earlier in the day, allowed the Spartans to lock up the league championship. It is the second straight season that CWRU has claimed the UAA Championship and the sixth time overall in program history. The Spartans are also the first team to earn a spot in the Division III Championship field and will make their third-straight tournament appearance and eighth overall in team history.

CWRU improved to 24-12-1 overall and 13-5-1 in the UAA, while Brandeis dropped to 11-26 overall with a 3-16 conference ledger.

The Spartan bats were the difference-maker in the game, as CWRU's hitters combined for 22 hits and a UAA single-game record 12 extra-base hits. The team's 25 runs scored were the third-most in a single game in program history.

Graduate student designated hitter Dane Camphausen finished the game three-for-six with three runs, seven RBIs, and a pair of home runs, both coming during a nine-run seventh inning for the Spartans. He now has 13 home runs for the season, matching his own program record set last year. Sophomore first baseman Tyler Stillson finished the day four-for-six with three runs, two RBIs, a walk, a double, and his sixth home run of the campaign. Graduate student catcher Jack Anderson reached base six times in the contest, going two-for-two with a double, four walks, four runs, and three RBIs. Sophomore shortstop Nate Arterburn was three-for-five with a double, three runs, three RBIs, and a walk.

Despite the high-scoring affair, the Spartans never trailed in the game, scoring two batters into the contest on an RBI double by senior center fielder Nick Harms. Brandeis tied the game with a run in the bottom of the inning, but CWRU responded with four more in the second to regain the lead. The Judges cut the Spartans' advantage to a run again with three in the second, but CWRU scored six unanswered runs over the next three frames to take an 11-4 lead after four and a half innings.

Brandeis scored two in the bottom of the fifth to remain within striking distance, but CWRU answered again with a single run in the sixth before scoring nine in the seventh to go ahead 21-6. While it looked like the game was out of reach for the Judges, they continued to battle back and forth with the Spartans. Brandeis plated sixth in the bottom of the seventh, and after CWRU scored a run in the top of the eighth, the Judges notched five in the bottom of the frame, cutting the Spartans' lead to 22-17 heading into the final inning. A three-run blast by junior center fielder Matt Trout in the top of the ninth, his first of the season, pushed the CWRU advantage to eight runs again, and the Spartans worked around a Brandeis run in the bottom of the ninth to hold on for the victory.

CWRU first-year lefty Anton Sabo earned the win for the Spartans, improving to 2-0 after giving up two runs on a pair of hits in his three innings as the first arm of the day out of the bullpen. Brandeis' Eddie Zanor suffered the loss, dropping to 0-7 for the season.

The Spartans and the Judges are scheduled to conclude their four-game series on Sunday at 11:00 a.m.

Spartan Notes

  • CWRU scored at least one run in all nine innings on Saturday and had five multiple-run innings.

  • The 43 runs scored in the game between the two teams set a new UAA record, besting the previous mark of 39 recorded between the Spartans and WashU on March 13, 2010. The two teams set the UAA record for the most combined extra-base hits (16) and walks (23) in a game and the most runs scored in an inning (15 in the seventh).

  • Anderson matched a program record with his four walks in the game.

  • The Spartans now stand at 36-27 all-time against Brandeis and have won 14 of the last 16 meetings. CWRU is 23–4 against the Judges since the start of site play in 2017.

  • CWRU stole seven bases on as many tries on Saturday and has now been successful on its last 32 stolen base attempts over the last seven contests.
