#6 Spartans Advance to UAA Semis with 4-1 Win over #33 Brandeis

The sixth-ranked Case Western Reserve University men's tennis team advanced to the semifinals of the 2025 University Athletic Association Championship with a 4-1 win over 33rd-ranked Brandeis University in the quarterfinals on Friday morning at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Spring, Florida.

CWRU has won 16 of its last 17 matches and improved to 23-5 overall, while Brandeis dropped to 8-7 with the loss. The Spartans, seeded second in the draw, will now turn their attention to the semifinals on Saturday where the team will face fifth-ranked and third-seeded Emory, which bested sixth-seeded WashU on Friday.

The Spartans were able to claim the doubles point with wins in the second and third matches. At no. 2 doubles, first-years Jon Totorica and Leon Chen bested Pierce Garbett and Aidan Wang-Fan 6-1, while senior Ajay Mahenthiran and junior Rohan Bhat picked up a 6-1 win at no. 3 doubles against David Galvez and Benjamin Kotzen. The first doubles match between senior Casey Hishinuma and Anmay Devaraj, ranked ninth in Division III, and Dylan Walters and Daniel Shemesh was stopped with the Spartans leading 5-2.

Sophomore Santiago Salazar Garza, ranked 49th in Division III, extended CWRU's lead to 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-1 win against Galvez in the sixth singles match, and Hishinuma put the Spartans on the precipice of clinching with a 6-2, 6-4 victory at fifth singles. After Brandeis' Walters, ranked 31st in Division III, bested Mahenthiran, ranked 17th, 6-4, 6-4 at no. 1 singles, junior Matthew Plunkett locked up the team win for the Spartans with a 6-1, 6-4 win at fourth singles over Wang-Fan.

When play was stopped due to decision, sophomore George Kosseifi, ranked 37th, trailed Shemesh 6-4, 5-4 in the second singles match and Devaraj led Garbett 6-4, 3-4 at third singles.

Saturday's semifinal match against Emory is scheduled for a 12:30 p.m. start. Spartan Notes

  • CWRU has now advanced to the semifinals in each of the last four years and has gone on to advance to the UAA Championship match each of the previous three years. This is the 10th time in program history that the Spartans have reached the semifinals of the UAA Championship.

  • Friday's match was the first meeting between CWRU and Brandeis since the 2019 UAA Championship. The Spartans have now won four of the last six matches with the Judges.

  • In addition to CWRU and Emory, top-seeded Chicago and fifth-seeded NYU advanced to the semifinal round of the UAA Championship with quarterfinal wins on Friday morning.
