#19 CWRU Clinches Series over NYU with 7-3 Win on ‘Senior Day’

Case Western Reserve University graduate student Dane Camphausen hit his fourth home run of the series and five pitchers combined to allow just two earned runs on seven hits to pace the 19th-ranked Spartans to a 7-3 win over New York University on Sunday morning at Nobby's Ballpark.

The win gave the Spartans their fourth win in as many University Athletic Association series this season, as CWRU improved to 22-11-1 overall and 11-4-1 in the conference. The Spartans will head into their final UAA series of the season at Brandeis next weekend in control of their destiny for the conference championship and the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament associated with it, and can clinch the title with three wins in the four games against the Judges.

NYU fell to 18-14-1 with the loss, including a 6-9-1 mark in the UAA.

The Spartans took a three-run lead just three batters into the game for the second-straight day, as graduate student catcher Jack Anderson and senior center fielder Nick Harms singled and Camphausen cleared the bases with his fourth home run of the weekend against NYU and team-leading 11th of the season.

The score remained 3-0 until the Violets broke through for a run in the top of the fourth, but sophomore right-handed pitcher Tyler Stillson stranded the potential tying runs on the base paths in the frame to keep a two-run lead intact. CWRU then added to its lead in the bottom of the inning, scoring four runs with two outs, including two on a single from senior left fielder Logan Andreyko and two on a hard-hit single to short by Anderson to take a 7-1 lead.

Stillson departed the game after four innings, allowing an unearned run on three hits and four walks with a pair of strikeouts. The Violets scored a run again in the top of the fifth against junior right-handed pitcher Archer Stankowski and cut the lead to 7-3 with a run in the seventh against senior right-handed pitcher Jackson Brewer, but senior right-handed pitcher Kyle Gearding struck out three batters in a scoreless eighth and first-year southpaw Jeff Radinsky retired the side in order in the ninth to close out the win for CWRU.

The Spartans outhit the Violets 9-7 in the game, including a two-for-four day at the plate for Anderson who added a double and two RBIs. Camphausen finished the game one-for-four with the three-run home run, and Andreyko added a one-for-two showing with a run, a walk, and two RBIs.

Stankowski picked up the win in relief, improving to 6-0 on the season. NYU starter Jacob Magna took the loss, falling to 1-3 for the campaign.

Sunday also marked 'Senior Day' for the Spartans, as the team recognized the seven graduating players in the class - graduate student second baseman Franco Alonso, Andreyko, Brewer, Camphausen, Gearding, Harms, and senior right fielder Jay Smith. The group has led the Spartans to a 105-52-1 record over the last four years, including a 54-20-1 mark over the last two, with two UAA Championships and two NCAA Tournament berths.

The Spartans will head to Waltham, Massachusetts next weekend for its final UAA series of the season against Brandeis University. The four-game set is slated to begin with a single game next Friday, April 25 at 3:00 p.m.
