No. 18 Women’s Tennis Sweeps Allegheny in Regular Season Finale

The 18th-ranked Case Western Reserve University women's tennis team defeated Allegheny College 7-0 on Friday afternoon at the Carlton Courts in Cleveland to wrap up the regular season.

The Spartans improved to 12-5 on the season, while the Gators dropped to 18-7.

CWRU swept the doubles matches with a trio of 6-1 wins. At first doubles, graduate student Laurel Utterback and junior Ellior Rose defeated Emiliia Grydnieva and Adriana Navarro. At second doubles, sophomore Katie Wong and first-year Maya Brink took down Maria Lounder and Nicole Serna Cassan. Finally, sophomore Kareena Sivanesan and first-year Yasemin Bilgin won over Mackenzie Burd and Jillian Clark.

In singles play, three Spartans won matches while dropping just one point. Utterback defeated Grydnieva at first singles, 6-0, 6-1. Sivanesan won 6-1, 6-0 over Burd at fifth singles, and first-year Sara Fernandez prevailed 6-1, 6-0 over Clark. At third singles, Rose won 6-2, 6-1 over Lounder, while at fourth singles, Brink defeated Navarro 6-1, 6-3. Junior Katalina Wang completed the sweep with a 6-4, 6-2 victory at second singles over Serna Cassan.

CWRU will head to Florida next weekend for the University Athletic Association Tournament. Quarterfinal matchups from Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs will begin on Thursday, April 24 at 8 a.m. with second round matches held on Friday at 12 p.m. and placement matches starting on Saturday at 8 a.m. The full bracket for the championship will be released early next week with information about the tournament available at https://athletics.cmu.edu/athletics/tournaments/2025_UAA_Tennis/index.

Spartan Notes

  • The Spartans have won their last eight matches against the Gators, with all eight wins coming by sweep. Allegheny last defeated CWRU 5-4 on April 13, 2011
  • CWRU improved to 109-56 (.661) in singles matches and 60-27 (.690) in doubles matches during the 2024-25 campaign
  • Of the Spartans 12 wins this season, eight have come via sweep
  • In the latest national rankings released by the ITA, CWRU was 18th nationally and third in the Central Region, while Allegheny was 66th nationally. Individual ranked Spartans included senior Lily McCloskey (38th nationally/fifth regionally), Utterback (eighth regionally) and Wang (20th regionally). The partnership of McCloskey and Wang also ranked second in the Central Region
