No. 17 Women’s Tennis Falls to No. 10 WashU in UAA Quarterfinal

The 17th-ranked Case Western Reserve University women's tennis team dropped a 5-0 decision to 10th-ranked Washington University in St. Louis in the quarterfinal round of the 2025 University Athletic Association Championship at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Florida, on Thursday morning.

With the loss, the fifth-seeded Spartans fell to 12-6 overall and 0-1 UAA matches. CWRU will take on eighth-seeded Rochester on Friday at 12:30 p.m. in the consolation round. The fourth-seeded Bears, who will face top-seeded Chicago in the semifinal, improved to 12-6 during the campaign and 1-0 in the UAA.

WashU took the doubles point with a pair of wins on the first and third courts. The nationally top-ranked pair of Eleanor Archer and Caitlin Bui defeated senior Lily McCloskey and junior Katalina Wang, ranked 10th in Division III, 6-2 at first doubles. On the third court, graduate student Laurel Utterback and junior Ellior Rose fell 6-2 to Eliana Hanna and Ally Lin. The Spartan pair of senior Anna Kan and junior Elsa Syed trailed Amber Edmonds and Samantha Slowik 5-1 when the point was decided.

The Bears won the second point of the match at fourth singles where Lin bested Kan 6-2, 6-3, added a point at fifth singles when Edmonds defeated junior Asha Shukla 6-2, 6-3, and clinched the match with a 6-2, 6-2 victory by Nina Moravek over sophomore Katie Wong at sixth singles.

WashU secured its final point at second singles with Bui, ranked 10th nationally, defeating Utterback, ranked 43rd nationally, 6-4, 6-4.

Wang forced a third set against Hanna at third singles, trailing 4-6, 6-2, 0-3 when the team match was completed. In a battle between a pair of nationally ranked players, McCloskey trailed Archer 5-7, 3-3 at first singles when the match was abandoned. Archer ranked 24th in Division III and McCloskey ranked 29th in the country.

Spartan Notes

  • CWRU fell to 1-10 in its last 11 matches against WashU with the lone win coming in the 2022 UAA Championship Quarterfinal Round
  • Despite falling into the consolation bracket, the Spartans are looking to match their second-best-ever finish in the conference of fifth place. Case Western Reserve has placed fourth twice (2022 and 2024) and fifth seven times, most recently in 2018
  • In addition to ranking first nationally, the doubles pair of Bui and Archer ranked first in the Central Region with McCloskey and Wang slotting in fourth regionally
  • McCloskey and Utterback both appeared in the Central Region singles rankings, placing seventh and 10th, respectively. The top four members of the WashU singles lineup were ranked with Bui and Archer appearing in the top five regionally
