No. 14 CWRU Drops Derby City Classic Finale to Ohio Northern

The 14th-ranked Case Western Reserve University baseball team concluded its weekend at the Derby City Classic in Louisville, Kentucky with a 10-6 loss to Ohio Northern University on Sunday.

The Spartans, who won two of the three games during the tournament, dropped to 3-3 on the season while the Polar Bears improved to 2-0.

Graduate student first baseman Dane Camphausen got the Spartans on the board in the top of the first with a one-out solo home run, his NCAA Division III leading seventh of the season. After a scoreless bottom of the inning from junior right-handed pitcher Archer Stankowski, graduate student second baseman Franco Alonso doubled with one out and scored two batters later on an RBI single by junior centerfielder Matt Trout. Senior designated hitter Jay Smith later scored on a sacrifice fly by sophomore shortstop Nate Arterburn and Trout crossed the plate on an infield single by graduate student catcher Jack Anderson to give CWRU a 4-0 lead after an inning and a half.

Ohio Northern got back into the game with two runs in the bottom of the second to cut the Spartans' lead in half, but CWRU added a run in the top of the third when senior right fielder Nick Harms scored from third with two outs on a steal of second by Alonso. The Polar Bears answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the third and scored three in the fourth to take their first lead of the game, 6-5, after four frames.

CWRU quickly evened the score in the top of the fifth after senior left fielder
Logan Andreyko led the inning off with a triple and scored a batter later on a sacrifice fly by sophomore third baseman Tyler Stillson. However, the Polar Bears added single runs in the fifth and sixth innings and two in the seventh to go ahead 10-6, and Ohio Northern's Sam Thombs held the Spartans scoreless over the final three and a third innings to lock down the win.

Camphausen finished the day two-for-five at the plate with the home run, a run, and an RBI. Alonso added a two-for-four showing with a double, a run, and a stolen base.

First-year Armand Ortiz took the loss after allowing a run on two hits in relief, falling to 0-1 on the campaign. Ohio Northern starter Joe Tootle picked up the win, raising his record to 1-0, while Thombs secured his first save of the season.

The Spartans will head back to Cleveland for the team's home opener at Nobby's Ballpark, scheduled for Wednesday, March 5 at 3:00 p.m. against Washington & Jefferson.

Spartan Notes

  • Sunday's game was the first between the Spartans and the Polar Bears since the 2015 campaign when CWRU claimed a 3-2 win at home over Ohio Northern.

  • First-year Anton Sabo made his collegiate debut on the mound, allowing an unearned run on two hits with two strikeouts and no walks.

  • Sunday's game marked the first time this season that the Spartans had not scored in their final at-bat of the game.

  • Camphausen has hit at least one home run each day the Spartans have played this season. His home run on Sunday was the 51st home run of his career (including his four years as an undergraduate at Wooster), the most among active Division III players and fourth among active NCAA players across all three Divisions. He is also the active Division III leader and third among all NCAA players with 202 career RBIs. Camphausen's home run was his 20th as a Spartan, the fifth-most in program history. He is now batting .462 with seven home runs and 15 RBIs through the team's first six games.
