Three Spartans Earn UAA Athlete of the Week Honors

Three Case Western Reserve University student-athletes earned University Athletic Association honors this week, as graduate student Michaela Burkhauser was named the Women's Indoor Field Athlete of the Week, senior outfielder Nick Harms was named the Hitter of the Week for baseball, and senior Lexi Miskey was named the Pitcher of the Week for softball.

Burkhauser highlighted the CWRU performances at the Polar Bear Final Qualifier on Saturday, recording a third-place finish in the weight throw. She notched a season-best mark of 16.27 meters in the event, the third-best mark in school history, the 37th-best in Division III this season, and the best by a UAA competitor this year. She also placed seventh in the shot put with a throw of 12.83 meters.

Burkhauser is the first CWRU women's track and field athlete to earn a UAA Athlete of the Week honor this season. She has qualified for the NCAA DIII Championship in the shot put and is slated to compete in the event this Saturday, March 14 at 2:30 p.m. in Rochester, New York.

Miskey helped the second-ranked Spartans split a doubleheader at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps to start their spring break trip on Sunday. Miskey pitched in both games of the doubleheader, allowing one earned run (four total) in 8.1 innings for a 0.84 ERA. She allowed six hits and five walks while striking out nine batters. Miskey picked up the victory in the first game of the doubleheader, a 5-4 CWRU win, entering the game in relief and pitching the final 4.1 innings, allowing one earned run (two total) on three hits and three walks with seven strikeouts. In the second game, a 5-4 loss, she allowed two runs (neither earned) on three hits and two walks with two strikeouts in a no-decision.

Miskey stands at 4-0 for the season with a 2.07 ERA and 25 strikeouts in 27.0 innings. This was the second time this season and the 15th time over her career that Miskey has been named the UAA Pitcher of the Week.

The softball team, which stands at 6-2 this season, will face Bethel and Illinois Wesleyan in Claremont, California on Monday.

Harms helped the 23rd-ranked Spartans open their spring break trip with a 1-1 record. Harms hit .444 (four-for-nine) with three runs, a triple, two home runs, and six RBIs over the two games. His highlight came during the team's 8-3 win over 16th-ranked Baldwin Wallace, going two-for-four with two runs, five RBIs, and two home runs (a two-run home run in the fourth inning to give CWRU the lead and a three-run home run in the fifth to add insurance runs to the total). In a 9-5 loss to Swarthmore on Saturday, he went two-for-five with a run, an RBI, and a triple.

Harms is batting .241 this season with two home runs and 10 RBIs while slugging .552 with a .343 on-base percentage. This was the third UAA Athlete of the Week honor of his career.

The Spartans stand at 4-4 for the season. CWRU will continue play during their spring break trip on Tuesday with games against Arcadia and Ithaca.
