The fourth-ranked Case Western Reserve University men's tennis team opened its 2025 spring season on Friday afternoon with a pair of 7-0 wins over Allegheny College and Oberlin College at the Mayfield Village Racquet Club in Mayfield, Ohio.
The Spartans improved to 2-0 with the win while Allegheny dropped to 3-5 and Oberlin fell to 1-2.
In its first match under the new Division III scoring rules, CWRU swept the three doubles matches against Allegheny to earn the doubles point. CWRU's second doubles pairing of juniors Rohan Bhat and Justin Prochnow bested David Rodriguez and Arick Baldwin 6-1, while sophomores George Kosseifi and Trey Lambright clinched the doubles point with a 6-2 win over Benedek Kaibas and Levente Mihaly at third doubles. The Spartans' first doubles pairing of junior Anmay Devaraj and senior Casey Hishinuma added a 7-6 (3) win against Anton Hedlund and Kristian Janci to complete the doubles sweep.
The Spartans went on to sweep all six of the singles matches in straight sets in the contest. Senior Ajay Mahenthiran secured a 6-4, 6-2 victory against Janci at no. 1 singles, while Kosseifi claimed a 6-4, 6-3 win against Hedlund at no. 2 singles and junior Matthew Plunkett bested Rodriguez 6-3, 6-1 in the third singles match. Rounding out the win, Devaraj bested Mihaly 6-2, 6-2 at fourth singles, Hishinuma picked up a 6-1, 6-1 triumph over Javier Bejarano, and sophomore Santiago Salazar Garza came out on top 6-4, 6-1 against Justin Hardie.
CWRU made quick work of Oberlin's doubles teams in the second match of the day with Prochnow and Bhat defeating Shawn Lisann and Brady Huggett at first doubles and Salazar Garza and sophomore Derek Shiffer besting Enrique Margain and Max Brose at second doubles, each by a 6-0 score, to give the Spartans the doubles point. CWRU first-years Leon Chen and Jon Totorica claimed a 6-2 win over Oliver Knijnenburg and Zain Makada at third doubles to complete their second doubles sweep of the day.
Hishinuma picked up his second singles win of the day with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Lisann at no. 1 singles, and first-year Rowan Matorin earned a 6-2, 6-2 win over Margain at second singles. At third singles, Lambright was victorious over Makada 6-3, 6-2, while Bhat claimed the win at fourth singles over Brose, 6-3, 7-6 (2). Completing the 7-0 victory were senior Ben Martin, who bested Ben Tichauer 6-3, 6-2, and first-year Konrad Kwiatkowski, who secured a 6-1, 6-0 triumph against Oliver Faranda.
The Spartans will now head to Rochester, New York for a pair of matches at the University of Rochester on Saturday, facing the Yellowjackets at 8:30 a.m. followed by a 12:30 p.m. contest against RIT.
