Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women’s Basketball Falls to No. 1 NYU, 86-62

The Case Western Reserve University women's basketball team dropped an 86-62 decision to top-ranked New York University on Sunday afternoon at the John A. Paulson Center in Manhattan, New York.

The Spartans fell to 7-17 overall and 2-11 in University Athletic Association play. NYU extended its winning streak to 55 games, improving to 24-0 this season and 13-0 in conference play.

Senior forward Evie Miller, playing in her penultimate game at CWRU, had a career day, scoring a career-high 21 points on 10-of-17 shooting, grabbing a team-high six rebounds, and dishing out three assists. Sophomore guard Maura Schorr added 13 points, six rebounds, and four assists, and junior guard/forward Emily Plachta added 11 points, five rebounds, and a career-high-tying four steals. Sophomore guard Mya Hartjes matched a career high with seven assists, scored nine points, and collected six rebounds.

CWRU stayed with the undefeated Violets early in the contest, using a 6-0 run to cut its deficit to one, 13-12, with three minutes remaining in the first quarter. Trailing by nine early in the second quarter, a 10-4 run brought the Spartans within three, as Hartjes punctuated the run with a layup as Schorr delivered the assist. Following an NYU timeout, the Violets ended the half with a 13-4 run to take a 12-point lead into the break.

The hosts began to pull away in the third quarter, scoring 30 points in the frame. A tip-in by Miller off an offensive rebound two-and-a-half minutes into the second half cut the Spartan deficit to 10, but that was the closest the visitors would get to tying the score for the remainder of the contest. Midway through the fourth quarter, Schorr drained three consecutive free throws to make the score 75-59, the team's smallest margin in the final frame.

The Spartans will conclude their season on Saturday, March 1 with a matchup against Carnegie Mellon in Pittsburgh. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m.
