No. 16 Women’s Tennis Sweeps Two Matches on Sunday

The 16th-ranked Case Western Reserve University women's tennis team swept a pair of matches on Sunday at the Mayfield Village Racquet Club in Mayfield, Ohio, defeating 25th-ranked Denison and Oberlin 7-0.

The Spartans improved to 3-0 on the season, while the Big Red dropped to 0-2 and the Yeowomen fell to 1-1.

In doubles play, sophomore Katie Wong and senior Anna Kan started the day with a 6-1 loss to Caroline Lopez and Charlotte Johns on the second court. However, senior Lily McCloskey and junior Katalina Wang won 6-4 over Peyton Oda and Maia Nowicki at first doubles, and graduate student Laurel Utterback and junior Elsa Syed secured the doubles point with a 7-5 victory over Dasha Chistyakova and Caroline Kittle at third doubles.

Utterback did not drop a point at second singles, winning 6-0, 6-0 over Johns. Kan gave the Spartans a 3-0 lead with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Kittle at fourth singles, and Syed clinched the match for Case Western Reserve by defeating Nowicki 6-2, 6-2 at sixth singles. McCloskey followed with a 6-2, 6-2 win of her own at first singles over Oda, and both Wang and junior Asha Shukla prevailed in three sets to complete the sweep. Shukla won 2-6, 6-0, 13-11 at fifth singles, and Wang defeated Caitlin VanWinkle 6-7 (1-7), 7-5, 10-2 at third singles.

McCloskey and Kan started the second match with a 6-0 win at first doubles over Rachel Allen and Hannah Soong, and the Spartans clinched the doubles point when sophomore Kareena Sivanesan/first-year Yasemin Biglin defeated Scarlett Kingston and Olivia Wollner 6-0 at third doubles. At second doubles, Syed and junior Ellior Rose added a 6-3 victory over Freya Rahm and Eva Lopez.

Wong dropped just one point at third singles, besting Rahm 6-1, 6-0. Utterback followed with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Anna Pastore at first singles, and first-year Maya Brink clinched the match for CWRU at fifth singles by defeating Lopez 6-2, 6-0.

Wang followed at second singles with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Allen, first-year Sara Fernandez contributed a 6-2, 6-1 triumph over Wollner at sixth singles, and Rose completed the sweep by defeating Kingston 6-2, 6-3 at fourth singles.

The Spartans will next travel to Greencastle, Indiana, for a pair of matches next weekend. On Saturday, March 1, the team will face DePauw on its home courts at 9 a.m. The following day, CWRU takes on 26th-ranked Grinnell at 10 a.m.

Spartan Notes

  • CWRU improved to 10-2 against Denison since 2012, including victories in the previous six matches. In 2022, the Spartans defeated the Big Red 5-1 for their first-ever NCAA Tournament victory
  • The Spartans claimed their 14th consecutive victory over the Yeowomen in a streak that dates back to the 2011-12 season
  • McCloskey won her 71st and 72nd career doubles matches moving her within four of the program record for doubles victories
