The Case Western Reserve University wrestling team hosted the 2025 University Athletic Association Championship on Saturday at the Veale Center in Cleveland and placed third in the team standings.
CWRU finished the day with 42.0 points. New York University won the team championship with 123.5 points, followed by Chicago with 80.0 points.
Junior Art Martinez had the best individual finish for the Spartans, placing second at 133 pounds. Martinez defeated James Carlock of NYU by major decision, 13-2, to reach the championship match for the second consecutive season. The win was the 100th of Martinez's career as he entered the day with a career record of 99-29. Martinez dropped a tough 8-6 decision to Jackson Rustad of Chicago in the final round.
Both junior Marty Landes and first-year Chase Crutchley finished third in their weight classes. At 165 pounds, Landes went 2-2, including a technical fall over John Garcia of NYU in 4:24. Crutchley went 2-1 at 174 pounds, earning wins by decision and major decision.
Senior Calvin Cai (149 pounds) and junior Thomas Wagner (157 pounds) added wins for CWRU. Cai defeated John Mariano of NYU in a thrilling 11-10 contest, and Wagner bested New York's Ammar Khan by fall in 3:30.
With two weeks to prepare for the NCAA Region V Championship at the end of the month, the Spartans will next send a contingent of wrestlers to the Regional Futures Open at Adrian College in Adrian, Michigan, on Sunday, February 2.
