Spartan Club Athletes of the Week for Nov. 3: Art Martinez & Sohalya Rawlins

The Spartan Club, comprised of Case Institute of Technology (CIT), Western Reserve University (WRU) and Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) alumni, parents of current students, faculty and staff, and friends of the University, is aimed at helping foster and honor the proud tradition of athletics at the University, while also supporting the current student-athletes. Case Western Reserve University senior Art Martinez, a member of the wrestling team, and first-year Sohalya Rawlins, a swimmer on the women's swimming and diving team, have been named the Spartan Club Athletes of the Week for their performances this past week.

Martinez advanced to the final of the 133-pound bracket at the season-opening Mount Union Invitational at the Peterson Field House in Alliance, Ohio, on Saturday. He went 3-1 during the event with a pin, scoring 20.0 points for the Spartans. Martinez started the day with a pin in 4:24 over Zakariya Gurban of Randolph before securing a win by injury default in the quarterfinal in 5:50. He battled Carter Beck of Gannon in the semifinal, prevailing with a takedown in the first overtime period for a sudden victory win. In the final, Martinez faced James Armstrong Jr. of West Liberty University, last year's Division II Freshman of the Year. In a hard-fought battle, he lost by decision 4-3. With the three wins, Martinez moved into a tie for ninth in program history with 109 career victories. CWRU finished third out of 14 teams, and first among Division III schools, with 138.0 points.

CWRU will host the Bob Del Rosa Open inside the Veale Center on Sunday, November 9. Action is slated to begin at 10 a.m.

Rawlins helped the Spartans win a pair of events for the 13th-ranked Spartans in a dual meet with 12th-ranked Carnegie Mellon at the Veale Natatorium in Cleveland on Saturday. As an individual, she won the 100 Free in 54.03 seconds, placing first by just 0.02 seconds. Rawlins swam the leadoff leg of the 200 Free Relay, helping the team place first in 1:36.47. CWRU fell to the Tartans 184-116 and dropped to 3-1 in dual meets this year.

CWRU will host Division II Gannon University on Saturday, November 8 starting at 1 p.m.

The Spartan Club Athletes of the Week are selected by the CWRU Department of Athletics each Monday, based on their performance during the previous week of competition.

Honorable Mentions


Sophomore Brendan Bradish (men's cross country) recorded a career-best time at the University Athletic Association Championship on Saturday in Edwardsville, Illinois. Bradish notched a mark of 26:08.1, an 11.3-second improvement on his previous career-best 8K time. He placed 45th out of 77 finishers in the race and was the fifth Spartan to cross the finish line. CWRU finished sixth out of eight teams at the conference championship meet.

Case Western Reserve's top runners will turn their attention to the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Championship at Tom Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Kentucky, on Saturday, November 15. Meanwhile, the Spartans will also send a contingent of runners to the Wooster Twilight 5K Challenge in Wooster, Ohio, on Saturday, November 8.

First-year punter Nick Delfau (football) punted six times for an average of 39.33 yards per punt during the team's 28-17 loss at Washington & Jefferson College on Saturday. Delfau placed two of his punts inside the Presidents' 20-yard line and had a 55-yard punt, his second-longest of the season. He is averaging 39.2 yards per punt this year with seven inside the opponents' 20-yard line and three of 50 yards or more. The Spartans fell to 4-3-1 on the season and 4-2 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference following the loss.

The Spartans will return to DiSanto Field for their final two games of the 2025 regular season, starting with a 1 p.m. kickoff against Grove City next Saturday, November 8 in Cleveland.

Junior quarterback Sam DeTillio (football) accounted for both Spartan touchdowns during the team's 28-17 loss at Washington & Jefferson College on Saturday. DeTillio completed 15-of-31 passes for 194 yards with a touchdown and an interception, while also running for a team-high 81 yards with another score. He completed a nine-yard touchdown pass to sophomore Will Stack with 14:05 left in the second quarter that gave the Spartans a 10-7 lead at the time. In the third quarter, he snuck the ball into the endzone from a yard out to cut the Presidents' lead to 11 points with 6:38 left in the frame. DeTillio has completed 57.0% of his passes this season for 1,468 yards with 12 touchdowns and six interceptions while rushing for an additional 383 yards with five scores on the ground. 

Senior swimmer John Drumm (men's swimming and diving) won a pair of events for 11th-ranked Spartans in a dual meet with sixth-ranked Carnegie Mellon at the Veale Natatorium in Cleveland on Saturday. He placed first in the 1000 Free with a time of 9:44.34, touching the wall nearly 11 seconds before the second finisher. In the 500 Free, Drumm recorded a time of 4:40.72, almost two seconds faster than any other swimmer. The Spartans lost to the Tartans 159-135 and dropped to 3-1 in dual meets this year.

Senior swimmer Claire Kozma (women's swimming and diving) won three events for the 13th-ranked Spartans in a dual meet with 12th-ranked Carnegie Mellon at the Veale Natatorium in Cleveland on Saturday. She won the 50 Free in 24.03 and the 200 Free in 1:54.85. In the 200 Free Relay, Kozma was the anchor, helping the squad win with a time of 1:36.47.

Senior middle blocker Amanda Ngo (volleyball) paced the Spartan offense during the team's three-set loss to 23rd-ranked Otterbein on Saturday at Horsburgh Gymnasium in Cleveland. Ngo had 11 kills during the match along with a team-leading .450 hitting percentage, committing just two errors on 20 attacks. This season, Ngo is second on the team with 271 kills (2.58 per set) with a team-best .281 hitting percentage. The Spartans dropped to 14-13 with the loss.

Case Western Reserve finishes the regular season with a road matchup at Wooster on Saturday, November 8 at 1 p.m. The following weekend the team will travel to Waltham, Massachusetts, for the University Athletic Association Championship.

Senior defensive lineman Sean Reilly (football) had a career day for the Spartan defense during the team's 28-17 loss at Washington & Jefferson College on Saturday. Reilly totaled career highs with 10 tackles (five solo), 3.0 tackles for loss, and one sack, while adding a fumble recovery and a quarterback hurry. Through eight games this season, Reilly has totaled 33 tackles (13 solo) with 6.0 tackles for loss, 2.0 sacks, and a pair of fumble recoveries. 

First-year Francesca Taracila (women's cross country) recorded a career-best time at the University Athletic Association Championship on Saturday in Edwardsville, Illinois. Taracila completed the 6K course in a time of 22:38.6, a four-tenths-of-a-second improvement on her previous career-best mark. She was the second Spartan to cross the finish line, and her time was good for 33rd place out of 77 finishers in the event. The Spartans finished seventh at the conference championship meet.

First-year diver Ryan Wells (men's swimming and diving) won both diving events for the 11th-ranked Spartans in a dual meet with sixth-ranked Carnegie Mellon at the Veale Natatorium in Cleveland on Saturday. In the 1-meter dive, Wells scored 267.80, and in the 3-meter dive, he recorded a score of 253.30.
