Women’s Basketball Improves to 3-0 With 65-58 Win over Adrian

The Case Western Reserve University women's basketball team won its third consecutive game to start the 2025-26 season, defeating Adrian College 65-58 at Horsburgh Gymnasium in Cleveland on Saturday night.

The Spartans improved to 3-0 this season, while the Bulldogs suffered their first loss of the campaign, dropping to 2-1.

Stats and Standouts


  • Senior guard/forward Emily Plachta led the Spartans with 16 points and a career-high nine rebounds while also matching a career-high with four blocks
  • Junior guard Mya Hartjes added 14 points, four assists, four steals, and seven rebounds
  • Junior forward Maura Schorr matched Plachta with nine boards, adding six points and three assists during the contests
  • CWRU held a 22-9 edge in bench points and 11-3 advantage in fast break points in the game

First Quarter


  • Adrian scored the first basket of the game and the hosts did not take the lead until a three-pointer by Plachta midway through the period made the score 10-8
  • Hartjes completed a three-point play on the team's next possession, Schorr added a jumper 30 seconds later, and senior guard Emi Hutter-DeMarco sank a pair of free throws to give the Spartans a 17-8 edge with two minutes left in the period
  • The Bulldogs scored three points with less than 14 seconds left in the frame, making the score 17-11 heading into the second quarter

Second Quarter


  • The Bulldogs used a 10-0 run in the middle of the period to take a 21-19 lead, but a layup by junior forward Biz Watson and three-pointer from sophomore guard Taylor Angielski gave CWRU a three-point advantage
  • Adrian reclaimed the lead with two minutes left, but the Spartans headed into the halftime break leading 29-27

Third Quarter


  • Less than a minute into the second half, senior guard Maya Roberts made a layup in transition to increase the team's lead to seven, 34-27
  • Hartjes pushed the advantage to eight, 40-32, with a three-pointer later in the period, but Adrian fought back
  • The visitors went ahead 43-42 on a jumper in the paint with 25 seconds left in the frame
  • With just seconds remaining, Hutter-DeMarco nailed a three-pointer to give the Spartans the advantage heading into the final frame

Fourth Quarter


  • The team would not relinquish the lead in the fourth quarter, outscoring Adrian by five to win the game
  • The Bulldogs cut their deficit to four with 3:06 left, but sophomore guard/forward Lauren Ludwig scored her only three points in the game on the next possession to increase the lead to seven
  • Neither team was able to score until Angielski was fouled with 1:05 left, and the Spartan sophomore made both attempts from the charity stripe
  • She made two more free throws later in the period, and Roberts added a pair of makes to seal the victory in the closing seconds

Spartan Notes


  • Saturday's game was the first meeting between the Spartans and the Bulldogs since the 2004-05 season, when CWRU came away with a 76-55 win over Adrian
  • The Spartans won their first three games of the season for the first time since the 2022-23 campaign and the fifth time under the leadership of Head Coach Jennifer Reimer
  • Nine of the 10 Spartans to appear in the contest scored at least three points
  • Case Western Reserve blocked a season-high six shots in the game
  • Plachta has scored in double figures in all three games this season, dropping 24 in the season-opening contest and 19 in the second game of the campaign
