Case Western Reserve University senior guard/forward Emily Plachta and junior forward Maura Schorr each recorded a double-double, but it was not enough for the Spartans, who suffered their first loss of the 2025-26 season, falling to Capital University 59-54 in overtime on Wednesday night in Columbus, Ohio.
The Spartans fell to 3-1 with the loss, while Capital improved to 3-0.

Plachta finished the game with 14 points and a career-high 12 rebounds. She added a pair of blocks and a steal in the game.

Schorr finished the game with 10 points and 10 rebounds, both season-high marks. She shot five-of-11 from the floor and added a pair of steals.

Junior guard Mya Hartjes finished the game with team-highs in both points (15) and assists (3), while adding eight rebounds and a steal in a well-rounded effort. She shot six-of-19 from the floor in the game.

Wednesday's contest remained close most of the way despite a tough night from the floor for the Spartans, who shot 28.6% (22-77) overall and 8.0% (2-25) from long range. The Comets finished the game shooting 35.4% (23-65) overall and 24.0% (6-25) from behind the three-point line.

CWRU held advantages in points off turnovers (12-7), points in the paint (34-28), second-chance points (10-7), fast break points (11-0), and bench points (6-0). The Spartans also forced 20 Capital turnovers (including 11 steals) while committing just 14 and outrebounded the Comets 51-50, including a 21-16 edge in offensive rebounds.

The Spartans could not overcome a monster effort from Capital forward Samaree Perkins, who finished the game with 23 points and 19 rebounds.
First Period

The score remained within a possession for the entire first quarter.

Down 8-6 with three minutes left in the frame, baskets by Schorr and senior guard Maya Roberts put the Spartans ahead 10-8 with under a minute remaining in the period.

Capital would tie the game at 10-10 by the end of the period.
Second Period

The Spartans found themselves behind 15-12 early in the period before a 6-0 run over the next 5:36, capped off by a jumper from Schorr, put CWRU ahead 18-15 with 4:06 to play in the half.

Capital regained the lead with five-straight points, but a layup by Schorr with 1:48 on the clock evened the score again, and the game remained tied 20-20 going into halftime.

Schorr made three of the team's four baskets during the period and scored six of the team's 10 points during the frame.
Third Period

The game remained within a possession until midway through the third when a layup from Plachta and a three by Hartjes off a block from junior forward Biz Watson on the other end of the court gave CWRU its largest lead of the game, 34-28, with 4:35 left in the third.

However, CWRU would not score again during the period as Capital reeled off the final four points of the frame to pull back within two, 34-32, going into the final quarter.

Plachta scored seven points in the period, with Hartjes adding five.
Fourth Period

Capital scored the first points of the fourth to tie the game and went on to take a 44-40 lead with 4:48 left to play in regulation.

Baskets from senior guard Emi Hutter-DeMarco and Schorr evened the score at 44 apiece with 3:28 to go in the game.

The Spartans found themselves down a point with 1:54 to go, but Plachta evened the score at 45-45 with a free throw.

Neither team would score for the remainder of regulation, sending the game into overtime.
Overtime

After the Comets hit the first basket of overtime, Roberts connected on a three-pointer to put the Spartans ahead 48-47. However, Capital responded with five straight points to take a four-point lead.

The Spartans would remain behind the rest of the game, despite pulling back within two points, 54-52, with 1:40 on the clock after a basket by junior guard Jordyn Call.

Capital secured the win with five unanswered points, and a layup by Hartjes with 11 seconds to go cut into the Comets' lead, but it would be too little, too late for the Spartans.

Through the team's first four games of the season, the Spartans have not faced an opponent that has entered the contest with a loss to their record.

Plachta's double-double was the first of her career. The 12 rebounds marked the second-straight game she has surpassed her career-high for rebounds in a game.
