CWRU Women’s Soccer to Host NCAA First and Second Rounds

Spartans earn sixth consecutive tournament berth, will host for fifth time

The sixth-ranked Case Western Reserve University women's soccer team was selected as one of the 16 hosts of the first and second rounds of the 2025 NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship, as announced by the NCAA in a selection show on Monday.

Swarthmore College, Bridgewater College (Va.), and Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology will be traveling to Cleveland to compete on DiSanto Field in the first two rounds of the tournament on Saturday, November 15 and Sunday, November 16.

The Spartans will face Rose-Hulman (11-6-2), the champions of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference, on Saturday. On the other side of the draw, Swarthmore (14-3-3), the runner-up in the Centennial Conference, will face Bridgewater (15-5-0), a semifinalist in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference, on Saturday. The two advancing teams will meet in the Second Round on Sunday.

CWRU (13-2-3) received an at-large selection to the tournament based on its fifth-place finish in the NCAA Power Index, which was used to make the 21 at-large selections. Of the at-large teams selected to the championship, the Spartans had the third-highest NPI. Seven teams from the eight-team University Athletic Association qualified for the NCAA Tournament, the most of any Division III conference.

It is the sixth consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament for Case Western Reserve, its seventh appearance overall, and its second under the leadership of Head Coach Alyssa Johnson. Last season, the Spartans reached the second round of the tournament for the fourth year in a row, falling to Messiah 1-0 in the round of 32. The program, which has a 10-5-1 all-time record in postseason contests, advanced to the national championship game in 2022. Case Western Reserve previously hosted the first two rounds in 2023, 2022, 2021, and 2011 and hosted the Sectional Rounds in 2022 and 2021.

The Engineers, ranked 156th in NPI, are making their fourth all-time appearance in the NCAA Tournament. RHIT qualified for the championship in 2007, 2019, and 2022, losing in the first round all three years. The meeting with the Spartans will be the first between the programs in their combined histories.

The Garnet, ranked 20th in NPI and 13th in the last United Soccer Coaches poll of the regular season, will appear in the NCAA Tournament for the eighth time in program history, compiling a 7-7-4 all-time record in postseason games. Swarthmore qualified for the tournament six consecutive seasons from 2014-19 and last appeared in 2023. The Garnet advanced to the national quarterfinals in 2015, their best-ever run.

The Eagles, ranked 37th in NPI, are making just their second-ever postseason appearance after previously qualifying for the national tournament in 2018. Bridgewater lost its lone NCAA Tournament contest 1-0 to Hope College.

If the Spartans were to advance, they would face Swarthmore or Bridgewater for the first time ever.
