The Case Western Reserve University volleyball team dropped a three-set match to 23rd-ranked Otterbein University on Saturday afternoon at Horsburgh Gymnasium in Cleveland, falling 20-25, 18-25, 13-25, on Senior Day.
The Spartans fell to 14-13 overall, while the Cardinals improved to 22-4 in 2025.
Stats and Standouts
- Senior middle blocker Amanda Ngo led the Spartans with 11 kills and a .450 attacking percentage
- Senior outside hitter Kalli Wall added nine kills and two blocks
- Sophomore defensive specialist Sophia Datto paced the squad with eight digs and added a service ace
- Sophomore setter Elena Esquivel had a team-high 18 assists while adding four digs
- Sophomore setter Avery Basinger contributed seven assists and five digs
First Set (20-25)
- CWRU started the match with an 8-2 run, getting kills from Basinger, Ngo, Wall, and senior middle blocker Kiya Levy
- A 5-1 Otterbein run cut the Cardinal deficit to two, 13-11, and the visitors tied the score at 17 with a kill
- A service ace gave Otterbein its first lead of the stanza, but the teams traded the next five points, leading to a 20-20 tie
- Otterbein won the final five points to claim the first set
Second Set (18-25)
- With the score tied at five in the second period, Otterbein won seven of the next nine rallies to take a five-point lead
- The Spartans cut their deficit to two multiple times, including 18-16 late in the set
- The Cardinals used a 6-1 run to take a 24-17 lead and closed the set two points later
Third Set (13-25)
- Otterbein took a six-point lead with an 8-2 run early in the third set
- After a kill by Ngo, the Cardinals won seven of the following 10 points to extend their advantage to nine
- A service error brought the Spartans within eight, 20-12, but Otterbein closed out the set with five quick points, finishing the match
Spartan Notes
- CWRU dropped to 5-8 against Otterbein since 2006, breaking a two-match winning streak
- Prior to the match, the Spartans honored their four graduating team members: Levy, Ngo, senior Elizabeth Onyekwere, and Wall as part of Senior Day
