Men’s Soccer Drops 1-0 Game to No. 7 WashU

The Case Western Reserve University men's soccer team lost 1-0 to seventh-ranked Washington University in St. Louis on Saturday morning at DiSanto Field in Cleveland to start the school's Homecoming Saturday.

The Spartans fell to 6-2-4 overall and 0-1-1 in University Athletic Association contests. The Bears improved to 10-1-0 this season and 2-0-0 in the UAA.

Stats and Standouts

  • CWRU had a 10-8 advantage in shots and a 5-3 edge in shots on goal during the game
  • Junior Ohta Kamiya and sophomore Mitchell Fein both had two shots for the Spartans
  • Senior Bradley Winter made two saves in the game

First Half

  • CWRU had its chance in the fifth minute, when a shot by sophomore Philip Vlastaris was saved by the WashU goalkeeper
  • Kamiya's attempt on goal in the 17th minute on a free kick was deftly saved in the top right corner of the frame
  • The Bears broke the deadlock in the 21st minute, scoring directly off a corner kick by Zach Susee
  • Over the next 15 minutes, the Spartans took three shots, including one on goal, and earned a trio of corner kicks
  • Neither team scored for the remaining 10 minutes, keeping the scoreline at 1-0 at the halftime break

Second Half

  • A left-footed shot by Fein was saved in the 54th minute, the team's first attempt of the second period
  • Winter made a pair of back-to-back diving saves in the 61st and 62nd minute, keeping the Spartans within a goal with a half hour left in the contest
  • Junior Sean Wilson had a shot in the 74th minute that required a save, the team's final shot on goal of the game
  • Fein had the team's ultimate effort with under two minutes remaining

Spartan Notes

  • CWRU dropped to 5-28-2 all-time against WashU in a series that dates back to 1987
  • The first NCAA Power Index (NPI) rankings were officially released by the NCAA on Monday. Case Western Reserve ranked 53rd in Division III and fifth in the University Athletic Association with an NPI of 54.376. NPI is used to determine at-large selections and seeding for the national championship
  • The loss was the first this season for Case Western Reserve at home. The team was 3-0-2 in games at DiSanto Field coming into the game

The Spartans will embark on a three-game UAA road trip beginning next week when the team heads to the University of Chicago for a matchup against the 19th-ranked Maroons. Kickoff on Saturday, October 18 is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. ET
