The Case Western Reserve University men's soccer team battled both a stalwart University of Chicago defense and Mother Nature, as the Spartans ultimately succumbed 1-0 to the 19th-ranked Maroons on Saturday in Chicago.
The Spartans dropped to 6-3-4 following the loss with a 0-2-1 University Athletic Association record. The Maroons improved to 9-1-4 with a 2-0-1 conference ledger.

Senior goalkeeper Bradley Winter played all 90 minutes and made a season-high five saves in the contest.

Senior Phillip Washington and junior Ohta Kamiya each had a team-high two shots for the Spartans. Washington led the team with two shots on goal, with first-year Alex Eby adding one shot on goal.

First Half

The first half of the game was interrupted by two separate rain delays. The first came with 16:33 left in the first half and lasted just over 30 minutes. The second came with 7:08 left in the period and lasted for nearly two hours.

Senior Phillip Washington had a pair of shots on goal in the first half but was denied by the Chicago keeper each time., including a header from a long ball by sophomore Mitchell Fein in the 13th minute that required a diving deflection by Ali Alamery.

Winter thwarted the best chance of the first half for the Maroons, diving to tip a 20-yard laser shot by Chicago's Chase Perry over the top of the crossbar in the 40th minute of the game. After the ensuing corner kick, a shot by William Stewart went off the crossbar, and the ball was eventually corralled by Winter to dodge the Chicago scoring threat, and the game remained scoreless through halftime.

Chicago held a 7-5 edge in total shots and a 3-2 edge in shots on goal after the first 45 minutes of play.
Second Half

The Maroons broke the scoreless tie in the 54th minute on a goal by William Stewart, his second of the year, off Max Weene's fourth assist of the year.

Chicago maintained the one-goal lead, but CWRU had a late chance to even the score. Junior Ohta Kamiya launched a long ball into the box in the 88th minute that nearly crossed into the goal, but a handball was called against the Spartans, ending the threat.
