The Case Western Reserve University wrestling team sent a contingent of team members to the Purple Raider Open at the Peterson Field House on the campus of the University of Mount Union in Alliance, Ohio, on Sunday.
Wrestlers competed against opponents from elite area clubs and all three NCAA Divisions.
Junior Marty Landes was the team's best finisher at the competition. Competing at 165 pounds, Landes pinned Colin Campbell of Davenport University in 2:40 to begin the day. After dropping a decision in the following round, he responded with a 17-0 technical fall over John Watson of Gannon in the consolation bracket. He advanced to the consolation quarterfinals after a pair of medical forfeits and faced Alaa Aly for a chance to reach the consolation semifinals.
In a rematch of his earlier loss, Landes did not concede a point until the third period, allowing an escape 12 seconds into the frame. He was unable to secure a takedown over the final minute, however, losing the contest by decision 1-0 to end his day.
In the 157-pound bracket, junior John Conover won his second bout of the day, defeating Gavin Nelson by major decision, 10-0.
The Spartans will return home next week for their final dual meet of the season, hosting the sixth-ranked Baldwin Wallace University Yellow Jackets on Friday, January 24 at 7 p.m. inside the Veale Center.
