#13 Spartans Edge Penn St. Behrend on Silva’s Last-Minute Goal

Case Western Reserve University junior Andrea Silva scored with 43 seconds left to break a tie and lift the 13th-ranked Spartans to a 2-1 win at Penn State Behrend in Erie, Pennsylvania on Wednesday evening.

The Spartans, who improved to 6-0-2, secured a key early-season victory over a regionally ranked opponent with the win over the Lions, who fell to 6-2-0. CWRU entered the week ranked second in Region VII, while Penn State Behrend was ranked sixth.

Silva picked an opportune time to notch her first goal of the campaign, running on a high-bouncing ball sent into the box by junior forward Alexis Sassower, and finishing with a shot into the net for what would prove to be the game-winner in the 90th minute of action. The shot broke a 1-1 stalemate that had stood for the previous 84 minutes of play.

In a frenzied start to the game, the Spartans and the Lions found themselves even at a goal apiece less than five minutes into the contest. Senior midfielder Sydney Schenk gave the Spartans a 1-0 lead at the 3:41 mark, scoring her third goal of the season off an assist from junior midfielder Mackenzie Mueller. It was the team-leading third assist of the campaign for Mueller.

However, Penn State Behrend had a quick response, knotting the score just 70 seconds later on Audra Kuzma's first goal of the campaign.

The Spartans continued to put pressure on the Lions, outshooting Penn State Behrend 9-3 in the first half and 9-2 in the second, but would not find the goal again until Silva's game-winning strike in the closing minute of the contest.

CWRU finished the game with a 6-2 edge in shots on goal and a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks.

Graduate student goalkeeper Maggie Storti played all 90 minutes in goal, making one save and improving to 6-0-2 for the season.

The Spartans will be back in action on Saturday, September 28 at 5:30 p.m. on the road against Wittenberg University.

Spartan Notes:

  • CWRU extended its streak to 50 consecutive regular season non-conference matches without a loss, going 47-0-3 in those contests.

  • Wednesday's win was the Spartans' fourth straight against Penn State Behrend as CWRU improved to 8-3-0 all-time against the Lions.

  • Silva's goal was the first game-winning goal of her Spartan career and her fourth career goal overall.
