The 13th-ranked Case Western Reserve University women's soccer team remained undefeated after a 1-1 tie with Wittenberg University on Saturday evening at Edwards-Maurer Stadium in Springfield, Ohio.
The Spartans moved to 6-0-3 on the season, while the Tigers' record changed to 2-3-2.
Wittenberg scored first, breaking the deadlock in the 25th minute on a goal by Caroline Stupp.
A few moments later, CWRU nearly equalized when a shot by junior Mackenzie Mueller hit the crossbar. However, the Spartans could not score in the final 20 minutes of the first half. Defensively, Case Western Reserve prevented Wittenberg from taking any shots over the final 20 minutes of the opening period, keeping the Tigers from increasing their lead.
Just seven minutes into the second half, the visitors found an equalizer as junior Alexis Sassower found the back of the net for the fifth time this season.
The Spartans nearly scored a game-winning goal in the final minutes of the contest for the second game in a row. However, two shots were saved, and a set piece attempt was unable to get past the Wittenberg goalkeeper leading to the 1-1 draw.
Case Western Reserve had the advantage in shots (12-7) and shots on goal (7-6) in the contest. Mueller had a team-high four shots with Sassower adding a pair of attempts on target. In goal, graduate student Maggie Storti recorded five saves in 90 minutes to match a season high.
