Men’s Soccer Earns Draw with Denison on Last-Minute Goal

First-year Amir Awais scored his first career goal with just 49 seconds left in the Case Western Reserve University men's soccer team's game against Denison University, earning the Spartans a 1-1 draw on Saturday afternoon at Kienzle-Hylbert Stadium in Granville, Ohio.

The Spartans moved to 4-2-1 with the tie, while the Big Red's record changed to 4-1-2.

Battling for the ball at the top of the box, sophomore Adam Pluszczyk sent a pass to Awais about 20 yards from the goal. The unmarked first-year sent a one-time shot into the top right corner of the net, beating the Denison goalkeeper and tying the score with 49 seconds left on the clock.

Earlier in the match, Denison broke the deadlock, tallying a goal in the 75th minute on a cross deflected into the back of the net. Eli Taylor was credited with the score, his first of the season.

CWRU registered five shots in the contest with four coming on goal. Senior Camden Larson led the squad with two attempts, and both required saves. Junior goalkeeper Bradley Winter faced seven shots in the contest and made three saves, all of which came in the second half.

The Spartans will next host crosstown rival #23 John Carroll University at DiSanto Field on Wednesday, September 25, with kickoff scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
