The Case Western Reserve University men's soccer team used a goal in each half to upset 24th-ranked crosstown rival John Carroll University 2-0 on Wednesday night at DiSanto Field in Cleveland.
The Spartans improved to 5-2-1 on the season with their third win in four games, while the Blue Streaks fell to 5-2-2 in 2024.
In the 27th minute, senior Lukas Dalakis scored for the first time in the season to give the hosts an early lead. On the attack, junior Phillip Washington found Dalakis about 25 yards out from the box in the middle of the pitch. The senior took one step and fired a hard shot into the bottom left corner of the net for the goal. Washington earned his first career assist on the play.
In the last minutes of the half, Case Western Reserve survived a frantic JCU attack with junior goalkeeper Bradley Winter and the entire defense keeping the Blue Streaks off the board. John Carroll continued to press to start the second period, firing five shots in the first 10 minutes of play. CWRU cleared a pair of corner kicks in the early stages of the stanza to maintain the lead.
With just over 10 minutes left in the contest, sophomore Sean Wilson doubled his team's advantage with his first goal of the campaign. Sophomore Ohta Kamiya sent a short pass to Wilson in the middle of the box. He then centered the ball and hit a strike in the lower right corner for the score. Kamiya collected his second assist of the season with the helper.
The Blue Streaks managed just one shot in the final portion of the contest, unable to stage a dramatic comeback. Winter saved three shots to post the clean sheet, his third of the season, with Washington, senior Josh Cook, and sophomore Cameron Thayer playing the entire game on the backline. Winter lowered his goals against average to 0.40 and improved his save percentage to .857.
Offensively, CWRU recorded eight shots in the game with six on goal. Seven Spartans had an attempt on goal with Dalakis contributing a team-high two shots. JCU totaled 16 shots.
Case Western Reserve will continue its three-game homestand with a matchup against the University of Mount Union on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
