Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men’s Soccer Scores Twice in First Half to Defeat Marietta

The Case Western Reserve University men's soccer team scored twice in a three-minute span to defeat Marietta College 2-0 on Wednesday night at DiSanto Field in Cleveland.

The Spartans improved to 4-2-0 on the season, picking up their fourth win in the last five games, while the Pioneers fell to 2-4-1.

Senior Kysen Kroeger was involved in both goals for the Spartans, recording an assist and a goal in the same game for the first time in his career. He leads the squad this season with 11 points on a team-high five goals and one assist.

In the 28th minute, Kroeger received a through ball on the far side of the field from graduate student Kellan Landefeld. The senior sent a pass to the middle of the box, finding sophomore Adam Pluszczyk in the area. Pluszczyk fired the ball low into the bottom corner of the net to break the deadlock. It marked his first goal of the season and the third of his career.

Just under three minutes later, Kroeger would find the back of the net himself to double the team's lead. Senior Lukas Dalakis sent a pass to his wide-open classmate in the middle of the box. Not offside, Kroeger sent the ball low on the ground and past the goalkeeper for the score. Dalakis earned his third assist in 2024 and the eighth of his career on the play.

Though the Spartans did not score for the remainder of the contest, they controlled possession and allowed just three total shots by the Pioneers. Defenders Phillip Washington and Eshwar Challa both played all 90 minutes on the backline, leading the team's defensive effort throughout the game. Junior goalkeeper Stephen Vilardo did not have to record a save, but he did earn his first career shutout and his second victory of 2024.

Offensively, CWRU recorded 17 total shots with Pluszczyk and first-year Owen Guffey both totaling three attempts.

The Spartans will travel to Granville, Ohio, on Saturday for a matchup with the Denison Big Red starting at 1 p.m.
