2024 CWRU Softball Season Recap

For the second time in program history, the Case Western Reserve University softball team reached the Finals of the NCAA Championship, placing seventh in the country in 2024 after a historic season.

The Spartans won a program record 40 games during the season, finishing the campaign with an overall record of 40-9. The squad won the University Athletic Association for the third consecutive year, hosted an NCAA Regional for the third time, and advanced to the Super Regional Round for the second time in three seasons.

With the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament secured, Case Western Reserve opened the postseason with a 7-4 win over Penn St. Behrend in the Cleveland Regional. However, following a 7-1 loss to Calvin, the team needed to win three consecutive games to keep its season alive. In the first elimination contest, first-year Karen Potts delivered a go-ahead two-run home run in an 8-7 victory over Dominican. The following day, junior Lexi Miskey allowed just one run over 14 innings, and senior KaiLi Gross drove in five runs as the Spartans defeated Calvin 4-0 and 3-1 to emerge from the Cleveland Regional.

Hosting the best-of-three Super Regional Round for the first time in program history, CWRU did not disappoint the home crowd, sweeping Coe College with 8-5 and 8-3 victories on back-to-back days. With the second win, the Spartans punched their ticket to the eight-team final in Marshall, Texas, the team's first appearance at the national championship site since 2018. The team dropped a pair of close games in Texas, falling 5-2 to Belhaven, the eventual national runner-up, and 4-2 to Rowan, who placed third in the country.

During the regular season, the Spartans went 34-6, including a 16-4 mark in the UAA. The team started the season with a 4-1 record at the NFCA Leadoff Classic in Georgia and followed by winning nine of 10 games during its spring break trip to Florida. CWRU began conference play with nine consecutive victories before dropping three contests to WashU on the road. The Spartans recovered with a four-game sweep of Brandeis and clinched the conference title by winning their first three games against Carnegie Mellon at Mather Park. The UAA Championship was the seventh in program history and third in as many seasons.

Case Western Reserve swept the conference awards, with the league's Pitcher of the Year, Position Player of the Year, and Rookie of the Year on the squad.

Miskey, who was also a Second Team All-American, claimed her third consecutive UAA Pitcher of the Year honor. During the season, she broke her own program records for wins (26) and strikeouts (249). She compiled a 26-6 record, making 41 appearances in the circle, including 31 starts. Across 192 innings, she completed eight games, threw one shutout, recorded one save, and allowed opponents to bat just .181. The junior earned her third career All-UAA First Team selection and second career All-Region VII First Team honor. Miskey set career program records for wins (65) and strikeouts (615) during the campaign.

Rieger, the UAA Position Player of the Year, had a breakout senior season for the Spartans, starting all 49 games in left field for the squad. She was third on the team with a .383 batting average, recording 54 hits in 141 at-bats, and ended the season with a .443 on-base percentage, .582 slugging percentage, and 1.025 on-base plus slugging (OPS). Rieger slugged four home runs and 16 doubles, drove in 42 runs (second most on the team), and scored 39 times. On the basepaths, she led the team with 27 steals in 29 attempts, and in the field, she committed just two errors for a .963 fielding percentage. She finished her time with the Spartans with 114 hits, 110 runs scored, 77 runs batted in, and 76 stolen bases, the second most in program history.

Potts began her career with a 15-game hitting streak and did not stop producing for the Spartans during her debut season, earning UAA Rookie of the Year, All-UAA First Team, and All-Region Second Team honors. She started every game at shortstop for the squad, tying for the team lead with 67 hits in 160 at-bats for a .419 average. Potts paced the squad with a .492 on-base percentage and was second among CWRU hitters with .681 slugging percentage, leading to a 1.173 OPS. She scored a team-high 54 runs, the second most in a single season in program history, drove in 37 runs, and slugged eight home runs, 16 doubles, and one triple. Potts stole 26 bases in 30 attempts, the second-most steals for the team.

In her fourth season with the team, Gross earned her third career All-UAA First Team selection and first career All-Region Third Team honor while starting all 49 games at second base. Gross scored 40 runs during the season, stole 24 bases, and collected a hit in 18 consecutive games from March 11 to April 7, the longest hit streak by a Spartan in five years. She ended the year with 196 hits, 23 home runs, 131 runs scored, 131 runs batted in, and a .401 batting average for her career.

Hosey ended the year with a record of 13-1, ERA of 2.88, and 51 strikeouts, completing two games and earning one save.
