Case Western Reserve University graduate student catcher Jack Anderson, senior infielder Zack Carinci, junior outfielder Nick Harms, senior pitcher Tyler Horvath, and senior pitcher Reece Marley were each selected to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team for their achievements on the field and in the classroom during the 2024 season.
The Academic All-District Teams recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom. Players honored were selected by their school's Sports Information Directors and must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.50 cumulative grade point average.
This was the second straight season that Anderson, Carinci, Harms, and Horvath received Academic All-District honors. Each of the four went on to secure Academic All-America honors last year, with Anderson claiming a spot on the second team and Carinci, Harms, and Horvath securing a place on the third team. It was the first career Academic All-District honor for Marley.
Anderson, Harms, Horvath, and Marley have been placed on the ballot for the 2024 Academic All-America Team, which will be released on Tuesday, July 2.
Anderson, who was named to the D3baseball.com All-America Third Team and received University Athletic Association Position Player of the Year honors for the second-straight season, finished the campaign batting a team-high .406 while leading all Spartans with 61 runs scored, and added 18 doubles, three triples, three home runs, 37 RBIs, and 10 stolen bases. Anderson registered an OPS of 1.107 with a .600 slugging percentage and a .507 on-base percentage. He also appeared in eight games out of the bullpen, pitching to a 1-1 record with a 1.08 ERA and six saves, while striking out 11 batters and walking a pair. Anderson, who was named to the All-Tournament team during the NCAA regionals, was named the UAA Hitter of the Week twice during the campaign. He finished the season ranked 20th in Division III in runs scored, eighth in runs per game, 19th in saves, 37th in doubles, and 53rd in batting average. Anderson, who is currently attending law school at CWRU, had a 3.711 cumulative GPA as an undergraduate student and a 3.905 GPA as a graduate student.
Carinci hit .311 during his senior campaign while seeing the majority of his playing time as the team's designated hitter. He played in 36 games, including 35 as a starter, and scored 25 runs with eight doubles, two home runs, and 22 runs batted in. He stole 11 bases on 14 attempts and finished the year slugging .415 with a .394 on base percentage. Carinci also notched the 200th hit of his career during the NCAA Tournament. He is a mechanical and aerospace engineering major with a 3.889 cumulative GPA.
Harms was named to the D3baseball.com All-Region Third Team and claimed All-UAA honors for the third straight year with a first-team selection in 2024. He finished the year batting .275 with a .551 slugging percentage and a .393 on-base percentage for a .944 OPS. He led the team with 15 stolen bases (on 16 tries) while hitting a career-high 12 home runs with 10 doubles, 49 runs scored, and 52 RBIs. Harms has a cumulative 3.954 GPA as a computer science major.
Horvath graduated in May with a perfect 4.0 GPA as a finance major. He has secured both D3baseball.com All-America Second Team and D3baseball.com Preseason All-America First Team honors over his career, in addition to being named the UAA Pitcher of the Year in 2022. The right-handed pitcher was once again a force out of the bullpen for the Spartans in 2024, going 2-0 with four saves and a 4.00 ERA and striking out 59 batters over 36 innings and 16 total relief appearances. He was named the UAA Pitcher of the Week three times during the campaign.
Marley was named to the All-UAA Second Team for the third consecutive season in 2024. The left-handed pitcher finished the year with a 6-2 record and a 5.01 ERA with 65 strikeouts in 64.2 innings pitched and became the program's all-time leader with 216 career strikeouts. Marley graduated in May with a 3.778 cumulative GPA as a mechanical engineering major.
The Spartans ended their campaign with a 33-11 overall record, matching the second-most victories in a season in program history. CWRU won the UAA Championship for the fifth time in program history and earned its seventh NCAA Championship berth, reaching the finals of the regional round.
