Case Western Reserve University junior Lexi Miskey, a pitcher on the softball team, and senior Tyler Horvath, a pitcher on the baseball team, have been named the Spartan Club Athletes of the Week for their performances this past week.
Miskey was named the Most Outstanding Player of the 2024 NCAA Division III Softball Cleveland Regional after leading the Spartans to the Super Regional Round with four wins at Mather Park over the weekend. Miskey went 4-1, striking out 40 batters over 33 and one-third innings and recording a 1.68 earned run average. Opponents hit just .165 against her at the regional. On the final day, Miskey pitched all 14 innings for the Spartans against 25th-ranked Calvin, shutting out the Knights in a 4-0 win in the first game and allowing just one run in the winner-take-all finale, a 3-1 Spartan victory. She struck out nine batters in each contest, including the last out of the final game. On the first day of competition, Miskey recorded 11 strikeouts in six and two-third shutout innings during a 7-4 win, and in an elimination win over Dominican, she allowed just two hits in seven shutout innings while punching out seven. This season, Miskey is 24-4 with a 1.84 ERA and 218 strikeouts in 167 and two-third innings. Her win and strikeout totals are both single-season program records. The Spartans, who advanced to their third-ever Super Regional, improved to 38-7.
CWRU will host Coe College for the best-of-three Super Regional at Mather Park in Cleveland on Thursday, May 23 and Friday, May 24. Game one is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Thursday with game two slated for 1 p.m. on Friday and the third, if necessary game, to start at 3:30 p.m.
Horvath helped pitch the seventh-ranked Spartans to an 8-3 win in an elimination game against Alvernia University during the 2024 NCAA Division III Baseball Cleveland Regional at Nobby's Ballpark last weekend. Horvath was named to the All-Tournament Team after earning the win against the Golden Wolves, throwing five shutout innings in relief and allowing just two hits on a walk with seven strikeouts. He ended his season with a 2-0 record and a 4.00 ERA with four saves and 59 strikeouts in 36 innings. Horvath and the Spartans ended the year with a 33-11 overall record.
Sunday's loss completes a historic season for the Spartans, who matched the second-most wins in program history during the campaign and were ranked as high as seventh in Division III, the team's highest-ever national ranking. CWRU also claimed the fifth University Athletic Association title in team history and qualified for the NCAA Tournament for the seventh time.
The Spartan Club Athletes of the Week are selected by the CWRU Department of Athletics each Monday, based on their performance during the previous week of competition.
