#3 CWRU Advances to NCAA Quarterfinals with 5-0 Win over #15 Johns Hopkins

The third-ranked Case Western Reserve University men's tennis team earned a berth into the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division III Championship for the fourth-straight year with a 5-0 win over 15th-ranked Johns Hopkins University on Sunday afternoon at the Carlton Courts in Cleveland, Ohio.

The Spartans, who improved to 27-5 overall, will now turn their attention to their quarterfinal matchup on Tuesday, May 21 at 2:00 p.m. against either fourth-ranked Williams or ninth-ranked Bowdoin. The quarterfinals, semifinals, and national championship matches will all be held at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center in St. Louis.

This will be CWRU's fifth overall appearance in the NCAA quarterfinals.

CWRU took the early lead in the match by sweeping the three doubles matches. At no. 1 doubles, senior Vishwa Aduru and graduate student Diego Maza, ranked third in Division III, claimed an 8-2 win against Pranav Gadiraju and Allen Gong. Senior Sahil Dayal and sophomore Anmay Devaraj, ranked 17th, followed with an 8-3 win against the 25th-ranked doubles pairing in Daniel Ardila and Marco Azar at second doubles. Senior Daniel French and junior Ansh Shah put CWRU ahead 3-0 with an 8-5 win against Chakor Sankaran Rajendra and Hanyu Liu at third doubles.

Two veterans were able to close out the win for the Spartans in singles play. Aduru pushed the Spartans lead to 4-0 with a 6-2, 6-0 win against Sankaran Rajendra at no. 2 singles and Maza would provide the clinching victory at no. 5 singles with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Gadiraju at no. 6 singles.

The Spartans were up a set on three of the remaining four courts when play was stopped due to decision, with graduate student Michael Sutanto (ranked 38th) ahead of Liu 6-2, 3-2 at third singles, Shah leading Gong 6-4, 3-2, and junior Casey Hishinuma (ranked 46th) in front of Azar at fifth singles, 7-5, 6-2. In the first singles match, seventh-ranked junior Ajay Mahenthiran trailed 6-4, 3-2 to Ardila.

Johns Hopkins closed out its 2024 campaign with a 15-7 overall record.
